80-year-old invited homeless neighbor into his home, then was fatally stabbed, DA says

A 45-year-old man, Alon Riabichev, has been indicted for second-degree murder after stabbing an 80-year-old Manhattan resident, Lev Vayner, to death. According to prosecutors, the fatal attack was a brutal response to what is believed to be a prolonged period of exploitation by Vayner.

Riabichev had been living on the hallways of his mother's building, having been kicked out after she herself resided there. Despite having no other accommodation options, Riabichev found himself as a guest in Vayner's apartment, where he would often sleep and shower. Sources claim that this arrangement continued for some time, with Vayner showing kindness to the struggling individual.

However, prosecutors argue that Riabichev ultimately repaid his host's generosity with violence. In the hours leading up to the murder, Riabichev had purchased an 8-inch knife at a nearby store and returned to Vayner's apartment. The circumstances surrounding the attack are unclear, but it is believed to have occurred sometime between midnight and 3:15 am.

The following morning, police responded to a call from Riabichev himself, claiming he had experienced a "psychotic break" and killed someone in the hours prior. Upon arrival at Vayner's apartment, responding officers found Riabichev sitting on Vayner's bed, while the victim lay on the floor with multiple stab wounds.

An attorney for Riabichev has yet to comment on the charges against him.

ugh I'm so down w/ the justice system right now this guy gets indicted 4 his actions but like we all know how easy it is 2 get caught up in desperation & exploitation . seems 2 me like Riabichev got a raw deal, been living on the streets 4 who knows how long & finds solace w/ Vayner only 2 b stabbed back... what's gonna happen 2 him?

I'm not surprised that this is happening... like, it's crazy that people still don't understand how to treat each other with kindness and respect . I mean, Riabichev was literally living on the streets, and Vayner took him in as a guest? It's not rocket science, right? But at the same time, I can see why someone might feel desperate enough to lash out... it's like, we need to break down these barriers between people and just be more understanding of each other's struggles . that's so sad man... 80 years old and still living in a hallway it's like we've forgotten how to take care of our own remember when seniors used to live with their families or even had affordable housing back in the day? nowadays it's all about profit over people what happened to that guy Riabichev, was he really just driven by desperation or something deeper? his life was basically on hold while Vayner was exploiting him... and now he's gonna spend years behind bars for defending himself

I'm so sorry to hear about Lev Vayner . This whole situation is just heartbreaking. I mean, can you imagine having to deal with exploitation and feeling like you have nowhere else to go? It's not right that someone would take advantage of another person in such a way.

But at the same time, I don't think we should be too quick to judge Alon Riabichev . I mean, he was clearly desperate and didn't have any other options. And then for him to turn around and hurt someone who had shown him kindness... it's just devastating.
