Anthony Joshua's Driver Charged in Fatal Nigeria Crash
A Nigerian court is set to hear the case of Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, Anthony Joshua's driver, who is accused of causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash on a highway in south-west Nigeria. The incident occurred on December 29th and resulted in the deaths of two people: Joshua's personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami.
According to eyewitnesses, Kayode was driving at an excessive speed when his tyre burst while trying to overtake another vehicle. The Lexus SUV then crashed into a stationary lorry carrying soya beans on the hard shoulder of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, resulting in the fatal accident.
Kayode has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a valid licence, and "driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property". He was granted bail of 5m naira (ยฃ2,580) but will remain in custody until he meets the conditions.
Joshua and his mother paid their respects to Ayodele's family at a funeral home after the crash. The former world heavyweight champion suffered minor injuries while Joshua's driver received treatment for his own injuries before being kept under observation for two days.
The Ogun state government stated that both patients were stable and did not require emergency medical intervention. A full medical team has been assembled to monitor their conditions closely.
It remains unclear how high Kayode was travelling when the tyre burst, but investigators believe he was exceeding the speed limit at the time of the incident. The case is set to be heard in court on January 20th.
