Children's mental health improved after schools reopening during the pandemic

California Study Reveals Schools Reopening Boosted Children's Mental Health

A massive new study published this week has uncovered evidence that children, particularly girls, saw a significant drop in depression and anxiety when schools reopened during the pandemic. The research, which analyzed data from over 190,000 California kids aged five to 18, reveals a startling decrease in mental health diagnoses.

Conducted by researchers at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the study found that after schools reopened, the likelihood of children being diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) plummeted by 43%. This decline was seen nine months after schools resumed in-person learning.

The findings also show a notable reduction in spending related to these diagnoses. Just nine months after a school reopened, spending on psychiatric drugs dropped by eight percent, while ADHD medications saw a five percent decrease. Medical spending not including prescription therapy, which includes therapy sessions, declined by 11%.

Girls showed the most improvement after schools reopened, highlighting the crucial role of school-based social environments in maintaining their wellbeing.

Researchers attribute this positive shift to several factors, including disrupted social interactions, increased screen time, irregular sleep schedules, and family problems resulting from financial constraints. The study's authors also note that limited access to mental health support services provided by schools may have contributed to these findings.

Dr. Rita Hamad, senior author of the study, suggests that policymakers could have made different decisions if they had considered the risks associated with prolonged school closures, including the negative impact on children's mental health. However, the researchers caution that their analysis only included students from high-income districts and emphasize the need for further research into the effects of schools reopening in marginalized communities.

The study provides valuable insights into the complex interplay between social determinants, mental health, and educational settings, offering crucial lessons for future public health emergencies.

omg u guys can u believe this?! ๐Ÿคฏ they actually found out that kids' mental health improved so much after schools reopened!! i mean 43% drop in depression and anxiety diagnoses?? it's like a huge weight has been lifted off those little shoulders ๐Ÿ˜Š. i'm not surprised though, i've seen all the vids of kids going back to school and seeing their friends again... it's just human nature! we need more studies like this tho, especially for marginalized communities ๐Ÿค—. maybe they can learn from the successes in high-income districts and apply them to everywhere else ๐Ÿ‘

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ! Kids were literally suffering from too much screen time & not enough human interaction ๐Ÿ˜…. It's mind blown that schools actually brought them back together in a safe environment ๐Ÿ’•. The fact that girls showed the most improvement is like, totally fascinating ๐Ÿ‘ง. I'm all for learning more about how schools can prevent these mental health issues in the future ๐Ÿ“š. Maybe they should prioritize social skills classes or something?

๐Ÿคฉ I mean, this is insane! 43% drop in depression/anxiety diagnoses after schools reopened? That's like a miracle or something ๐Ÿ˜ฎ And it's not just the diagnoses that went down, spending on meds too ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm all for schools reopening and giving kids their social lives back ๐Ÿ“š But what's wild is how girls were the ones who saw the biggest improvement ๐Ÿค— Maybe it's because they need school-based social environments even more? Anyway, this study is a big deal and I hope policymakers take note ๐Ÿ“. We need to make sure we're supporting our kids' mental health in all areas of their lives, not just in schools ๐ŸŒˆ

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, can you believe it? Schools reopen and kids' mental health literally takes off like a rocket ship ๐Ÿš€! 43% drop in depression diagnoses is insane, especially for girls who were hit the hardest during lockdown ๐ŸŒŸ. It's no surprise, though - schools provide that social safety net that's so crucial for our young minds. And let's be real, screen time and family stress can't compare to face-to-face interactions and homework help from teachers ๐Ÿ˜Š. Now, I'm not saying this study is a silver bullet or anything, but it's definitely food for thought for policymakers ๐Ÿ’ก. They could've made some different decisions during the pandemic... who knows? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” Schools finally reopened and kids' mental health didn't totally tank... I mean, who knew going back to in-person learning wouldn't be the death of them? The 43% drop in depression/anxiety diagnoses is a decent starting point, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves here. It's only 190k kids from California, and we're already projecting this as some kind of 'silver bullet' for mental health? ๐Ÿ™ƒ Still, it's kinda reassuring to know that schools aren't entirely useless when it comes to keeping the kiddos sane. ๐Ÿ‘€

omg u guys i cant even right now ๐Ÿ˜ฑ this study is everything!! i mean, 43% less diagnoses of depression & anxiety after schools reopened? that's insane!!! girls in particular showed the most improvement which makes total sense to me cuz they need those social interactions 2 survive ๐Ÿค— i was reading thru the article & it said they think the kids were affected by all the screen time & irregular sleep schedules... like, yeah no wonder ๐Ÿ™„ and its so sad that schools didn't have enough mental health support 4 these kiddos ๐Ÿค• anyway, this study is like a huge wake up call 4 policymakers & we need more research on marginalized communities ASAP ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿค” schools reopening seemed to give kids a break from all that isolation ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ป it's crazy how much of an impact that can have on their mental health ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, who would've thought that just being in school again would make such a difference? ๐Ÿ‘ฅ especially girls, they're like super resilient ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ and social environments play such a big role in keeping them happy ๐Ÿ˜Š guess all those years of recess and lunchtime chats were doing more good than we thought ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ! I'm surprised to hear that schools reopened had such a positive impact on kids' mental health, especially girls ๐ŸŒน. It makes sense that being around friends, teachers, and a regular routine would help them cope with pandemic stress ๐Ÿ˜ด. The decline in spending on psychiatric drugs is also a big deal ๐Ÿ’ธ. Can you imagine how different the last few years would've been for so many kids if they'd had access to more mental health support? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Interesting that there's still room for improvement, especially for marginalized communities ๐ŸŒŽ

so I'm reading this thing about how schools reopening actually helped reduce depression and anxiety in kids... like, 43% less likely to get diagnosed or whatever ๐Ÿคฏ. it's crazy because I was thinking they'd all be messed up from being stuck at home all day, but I guess social interactions are key for girls specifically ๐Ÿ’–. also, the more screen time there is (ugh, I know), and irregular sleep schedules... that sounds like a recipe for disaster ๐Ÿ˜ด. I don't know if it's just because schools have mental health support or what, but it's still pretty interesting to me ๐Ÿค”

omg ๐Ÿคฏ can u believe this? it's like, the reopening of schools actually helped reduce depression and anxiety among kids! i mean, i know it's not a surprise to most people but still, it's amazing to see the data backing it up ๐Ÿ’ก girls in particular saw the biggest improvement, which makes sense cuz school is such an important part of their lives ๐Ÿค

and the fact that spending on mental health diagnoses dropped like 43% is just insane ๐Ÿ’ธ it goes to show how much of a impact schools have on our kids' mental wellbeing. i'm not surprised though, since school's where they learn social skills and all that jazz ๐Ÿ“š

it's interesting to hear from the researchers that disrupted social interactions and family problems were big contributors to the decline in mental health. it just goes to show how much we need to prioritize our kids' social lives and make sure they're getting the support they need ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿคฉ I mean, can you believe it? Schools reopening actually had a positive impact on kids' mental health! ๐ŸŒˆ It's crazy to think that just being in school with friends, having a social life, and getting some structure from teachers made such a huge difference. And it's not just girls either - boys also saw a significant drop in anxiety and depression.

I'm loving the fact that the study highlights how important school environments are for mental wellbeing. It's like, schools weren't just about academics, they were also about socialization and emotional support. And now that we've seen what happens when kids aren't in school, it's clear that schools need to prioritize mental health too.

I'm curious though, what can policymakers do to make sure all communities have access to good mental health support? The fact that the study only looked at high-income districts is a major oversight. We need to make sure our schools are equipped to support kids from all backgrounds. ๐Ÿ’ก

omg u no? schools reopening actually made a huge diff in kids mental health ๐Ÿคฏ! i mean, its crazy to think that just by gettin back to class, they started feelin less depressed & anxious lol. like, who knew learnin would be so good 4 them mentally ๐Ÿ˜‚. its not surprising tho, cuz we all know how hard it is 2 deal w/ lack of human interaction ๐Ÿค. i wish more schools would invest in mental health support 4 kids tho ๐Ÿค‘. anywayz, good 2 c these findings! ๐Ÿ‘

I'm not surprised to hear that schools reopening had a positive impact on kids' mental health ๐Ÿค”... I mean, who doesn't love being in class with friends and having a structured routine? ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘ซ But seriously, this study highlights just how important it is for our kids' wellbeing. It's crazy to think that even a pandemic-induced closure could have such a profound effect on their mental health! ๐Ÿ’ฅ The fact that girls showed the most improvement is really interesting too - I'm guessing it has something to do with the social aspect of schools being a big part of their lives ๐Ÿค—... Anyway, I'd love to see more research on this topic, especially in marginalized communities where these issues might be even more pronounced ๐ŸŒˆ

this is kinda weird - i just read this article about how schools reopening actually helped kids with depression and anxiety ๐Ÿค”... 43% less likely to get diagnosed after schools reopened? that's crazy! i mean, i knew it wasn't easy during the pandemic, but i had no idea it was THAT bad for their mental health. and yeah, girls were the ones who saw the most improvement - school social environments are super important, right? ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿค” I'm not entirely convinced by this study... like, sure, kids are happy when they're back in school, but isn't that just a cop-out? ๐Ÿ™„ We can't just say schools reopened fixed everything because it's convenient. What about all the kids who didn't have access to those mental health resources? Or the ones whose families couldn't afford therapy sessions anyway?

And what about the study only looking at high-income districts? That's not exactly representative of the whole population, you know? ๐Ÿค‘ What about low-income communities where mental health is already a huge issue? Shouldn't we be talking about how to support those kids more, not just patting ourselves on the back because some rich kids are happy again?

I need more info before I start jumping up and down about this study... ๐Ÿ˜ Sources, anyone? ๐Ÿ“Š

๐Ÿค“ I'm not surprised to hear that schools reopened are making a big difference for kids' mental health. I mean, we all know how isolating it was during lockdowns... ๐ŸŒŸ I've got a bunch of young friends who went through that, and they're still dealing with some major anxiety issues. But now that they're back in school, it's like night and day - they seem so much more happy and carefree.

And yeah, the fact that girls are doing way better than boys is pretty telling too... ๐Ÿ‘€ I think we need to talk more about how our education system can support all kids, not just those who have access to resources. It's like, schools should be a safe space for everyone, you know? ๐Ÿค

I'm totally stoked to hear that schools reopening had a positive impact on kids' mental health ๐Ÿคฉ. I mean, it's been crazy seeing all these memes of kids stuck at home with their parents going nuts ๐Ÿ˜‚. But seriously, depression and anxiety can be super debilitating, so any positive change is a huge win in my book.

I do wonder, though, about the factors that contributed to this drop in mental health diagnoses ๐Ÿค”. Like, I know screen time was way up during the pandemic (who didn't binge-watch Netflix for 12 hours straight? ๐Ÿ˜‚), but I'm not sure if limiting it would've solved everything. And what about the girls who showed the most improvement โ€“ did that have anything to do with them being more social or something? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

It's also interesting that the study only looked at high-income districts... like, what about all the other communities that might be struggling in different ways? We need more research on that stuff, for real ๐Ÿ’ก.

OMG, can you even believe it?! ๐Ÿคฏ Schools reopening had a MAJOR impact on kids' mental health! The numbers are insane - depression & anxiety by 43% less? That's like, a huge deal! ๐Ÿค“ And it's not just boys too, girls were the ones who saw the most improvement. I mean, think about it, school is where kids learn to interact with others, form friendships... it's so important for their mental wellbeing! ๐Ÿ‘ซ The researchers are saying that disrupted social interactions & family problems from financial constraints all played a role in this. And can we talk about how much screen time these kids had during lockdown? ๐Ÿ“บ It's like they knew schools reopening would be the key to saving their sanity! ๐Ÿ˜‚ So, what do you guys think? Do you agree with the researchers that schools should've considered the mental health impact before making those decisions? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” I think its amazing that a study shows schools reopening helped reduce depression and anxiety in kids ๐ŸŒˆ especially girls ๐Ÿ‘ง! Its like they just needed to hang out with their friends and teachers again ๐Ÿ˜Š. But at the same time, I feel bad for those kids who struggled with mental health issues before or didn't have access to good support services ๐Ÿค•. We need more research on that ๐Ÿ“Š. And yeah, lets hope future policymakers consider how schools reopening can impact our young minds ๐Ÿ’ก!
