A private plane crashed in central-eastern Colombia on Saturday, killing all six people on board, including Colombian singer Yeison Jiménez, officials confirmed.
The aircraft, a small charter plane with registration number N325FA, was headed to Medellín but never made it due to the sudden crash in the Paipa and Duitama area of Boyacá department. The Civil Aviation Authority released a statement saying that all six people on board died, including Jiménez, 34.
Jiménez was not only a singer but also an influential figure in Colombia's music scene. He had recently won several awards for his work, including the prestigious Premio Lo Nuestro award.
The cause of the crash is still unknown and authorities are investigating. Videos from the scene show the plane taking off before suddenly hitting the ground with loud shouts heard from those on board. The wreckage was later found engulfed in flames.
Transportation Minister Fernanda Rojas has released a statement assuring that the competent authorities have begun inquiries to find out what led to this tragic event. An investigation is now underway by the Technical Directorate for Accident Investigation, which will also collect evidence to identify the cause of the accident.
The Governor's office in Boyacá declared mourning in the department as an expression of their condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
