Coroner Apologizes to Maddy Cusack's Family as Inquest Delayed Again
The inquest into the death of 27-year-old Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack has been delayed once more, leaving her family reeling from yet another blow. The adjournment came on Monday with a new start date set for at least June 29th.
Initially scheduled to begin last January, the case was postponed due to a large amount of new evidence received by Sheffield United just before Christmas. This bombshell revelation was described as "totally unacceptable" by Cusack's lawyers, who claimed that such a massive bundle of documents just days before the hearing would be deeply distressing for the family.
Cusack's former manager at Sheffield United has also been called to testify in court and revealed uncertainty over his wife's holiday plans, which may clash with some proposed dates. This latest delay raises concerns about how much further the proceedings will be pushed back.
The coroner, Sophie Cartwright, expressed her apologies directly to Cusack's family for the repeated delays. "You have been in my thoughts, particularly over Christmas," she said. While a lawyer representing Sheffield United maintained that they had complied with all requests chronologically, the Cusack family was still left feeling let down.
Dean Armstrong KC, who is acting on behalf of the family remotely, expressed his disappointment at the lack of progress made by Sheffield United in meeting deadlines and receiving new evidence at an inconvenient time. "The family are very keen to progress matters as soon as possible," he said.
Despite offers of legal support from unions such as the League Managers Association, Cusack's former manager has chosen to represent himself during the proceedings.
