CTA bus driver helps dying man after Back of the Yards shooting

Tragedy on Chicago's Streets: Heroic Bus Driver Responds to Senseless Shooting

In the Back of the Yards neighborhood, a devastating scene unfolded Sunday night when a gunman targeted an unsuspecting 43-year-old man standing at a bus stop. The victim was shot in his abdomen and managed to board a CTA bus, where he collapsed. But what followed would be a defining moment in the lives of the bus driver and her passengers.

As the bus sped south, its driver made the unthinkable decision to call 911, put the vehicle on hold until help arrived, and wait with the injured passenger until paramedics could take him away. The courage and compassion displayed by this individual was met with the unimaginable – the man's death at a hospital just hours later.

Eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic, recalling hearing "at least five or six shots" from behind where they sat on the bus. When they looked up, they saw the injured man stumbling towards the front of the vehicle and onto a seat in front of the driver. Before anyone could react, he had fallen to the floor.

"I literally saw the man get on the bus, and now he's dead," said one shaken passenger, still grappling with the aftermath of that night. The horrific experience has left him reeling.

The Chicago Transit Authority has released a statement confirming they are cooperating fully with the police investigation into this incident, providing any relevant footage from security cameras.

In a city often plagued by violence, this harrowing episode raises questions about the value of human life and our collective response to senseless tragedies. While the perpetrator remains at large, the bus driver's selflessness has sparked an outpouring of gratitude and admiration for her bravery in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

omg i cant even right now 🀯 this bus driver is literally a hero what if she didnt call 911 or try to help the guy on the bus?? thats like, impossible to imagine how scared the passengers must've been though lol did they all get shock therapy after that? and isnt there like, a camera in every corner of chicago or something? how did they not catch the shooter yet?!

Ugh, I'm so glad someone actually did something right for once πŸ™„. I mean, it's not like most people would've just sat there while some dude bleeds all over the bus floor... anyway, kudos to this hero driver for putting her life on hold and showing some compassion in a super scary situation. And btw, who needs security cameras when you have witnesses who can literally hear "at least five or six shots" from behind them? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ That's just basic awareness, folks!

Man, that bus driver is literally a hero πŸ™ŒπŸ’•. I was thinking about it and I'm still shook by what happened on that bus. Like, 5 or 6 shots just fired and then this guy's on the bus, and next thing you know he's lying on the floor... it's just crazy 🀯.

What really gets me is that she didn't hesitate at all, she just did what was right in that moment. I mean, can you even imagine if we were in her shoes? We'd probably freeze up or something 😲. But not her, she put everyone's needs before hers and called 911... it's just amazing.

I'm so grateful for people like her who remind us of what's truly important in life ❀️. It's times like these that make you realize how fragile our lives are and how we need to look out for each other 🌎.

I don't think the police investigation should focus solely on finding the gunman, they should also look into why this guy went all crazy like that... was it economic hardship or mental health issues? I mean, we gotta address the root cause of stuff like this, not just blame the victim... and can you believe the paramedics took 2 hours to arrive? That's just unacceptable in a city as big as Chicago. The bus driver should get some kinda award for putting her life on hold to try and save that guy, but at what cost?

πŸ€• I'm glad someone was there to help that guy but like, what about the bus driver? She's gotta be traumatized after all that 😩. I mean, she's just driving along and suddenly this crazy shooting happens out of nowhere. And then she has to call 911, put her life on hold... it's a lot to ask. πŸš—πŸ’¨ Plus, can we talk about how the police investigation is gonna go? Is there even any evidence left after all that chaos? πŸ€” At least the bus driver got praised for what she did but I wish someone was thinking about her well-being too πŸ‘©β€πŸš‘πŸ’•

πŸ€• this is just heartbreaking I mean a hero bus driver who puts their life on hold for someone they didn't even know and still can't save them it's like what's wrong with our world right now? all these senseless shootings and we're still trying to figure out why some people have no regard for human life πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

man what a messed up city we live in 🀯 i mean seriously who just goes around shooting people willy nilly? it's not like there are any consequences or anything. and now this poor guy dies and it's all because of some psycho with a gun. the bus driver, i guess she's a hero or whatever, but let's be real, someone should've been doing something to stop him in the first place 🚫 at least she called 911 and tried to help, but what's the point if the system is just gonna fail us like it did this guy?

omg can u believe what just happened on that chicago bus 🚌😱?! this bus driver was literally a hero to the guy who got shot & she put everyone else's lives 2nd before even getting help 4 herself... 1st responders r saying they were supposed 2 get there like 10 mins b4, but cuz of her bravery, that poor guy got 2 hospital just in time πŸ˜πŸ’” i mean we gotta talk about how messed up our world is w/ all these senseless shootings & shootings on buses 🚨😩

omg that's such a brave thing for the bus driver 2 do πŸ™Œ!! i mean, she could've just kept driving & left the guy on the sidewalk, but nope, she stops & waits 4 help to arrive, which is literally lifesaving 4 that poor man πŸ˜”. and can u even imagine how scared everyone on that bus must've been? like, they're all shaken after witnessing that... i hope she gets the recognition & praise she deserves 4 her heroism πŸ™, this city could use more ppl like her doing good things πŸ’–
