How to spot November's supermoon, the closest of the year

This Wednesday night, sky gazers can witness a spectacle that's all too fleeting: November's supermoon, the closest of the year to Earth. As the moon orbits our planet in an elliptical path, its distance from us varies. When it happens to be at perigee – the point closest to Earth – a full moon is said to occur when the moon is about 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. In this case, the November supermoon will come within 222,000 miles of our planet, a mere 357,000 kilometers away.

While some scientists predict that higher tides may be caused by the moon's proximity, the difference is negligible. To spot the supermoon in all its glory, no special equipment is required – just clear skies and a keen eye for the night sky. The challenge lies in distinguishing it from other images or observations without assistance.

Supermoons are not uncommon occurrences; they happen several times a year. In October, one made the moon appear somewhat larger, while December's will be the last of the year. With November's supermoon arriving just as autumn's nights grow darker, this may be an ideal moment for astronomers and sky enthusiasts to bask in its unusual light.

As the world gazes up at the night sky, a unique display unfolds – one that invites us to pause, appreciate the moon's fleeting presence, and ponder our place within the celestial ballet.

😊 I love when there's a supermoon! They're so beautiful 🌕. It's crazy how close it gets to Earth, like 222,000 miles away... that's insane for our planet 🤯. I'm not sure if I can spot it without special equipment though, but I'll try to get some pics of the night sky and see what I can capture 🔦. Autumn nights are getting darker so this is a great timing, might be able to stay up late enough to see it 🕰️. Always makes me think about how small we are in the grand scheme of things 🌠...

😮 I'm literally so stoked for this supermoon!!! It's gonna be insane seeing that big ol' ball of rock in all its glory 🌕. And can you believe we get to witness it just when autumn nights are getting even darker? Perfect timing! 😎 I've been waiting months for this, and I'm not disappointed. The scientists say the tides might get a bit wonky, but who cares?! It's not like it's gonna affect my life or anything 🤣. I mean, have you seen those pics of supermoons? Mind-blowing! This is what makes me love living on this planet – we get to experience some of the most epic views in the universe, and for free! 🌠

oh man, i'm so stoked for my kids! they've been begging me to take them out for a moon gazing session on wednesday night 🌕😃 it's gonna be like a magical night to remember. supermoons are pretty cool anyway, but this one is like the ultimate treat. and you're right, it's not just about the size of the moon, it's about taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature together as a family 👪🌃 i'm planning on setting up some hot cocoa and snacks for us to enjoy under the stars... it'll be such a special night! 🍫🔥

Omg I'm so stoked for the supermoon this Wednesday 🌕🔥! I mean, who doesn't love a good moon sighting? 🤩 It's like nature's own light show, right outside our backyards. And you're right, it's not just about gazing up at the sky – it's about appreciating how small we are in the grand scheme of things 🌎💫.

I've heard there can be some changes in tides too, but I'm like "meh" – who needs a precise measurement when you're witnessing a lunar spectacle that's only gonna happen once? 😂 It's all about the experience and the memories we make while watching this celestial event. My fave part is how it brings people together – whether you're an avid stargazer or just someone who loves gazing at the night sky, supermoons are like a big ol' hug from the universe 🌟❤️.

I'm planning on getting some friends together for a moon-watching party this Wednesday. We'll grab some hot cocoa, find a comfy spot to gaze up at the sky, and just enjoy the show ⭐👫. Who else is excited for this? 🤗

🌕 gotta love how we're distracted from real issues by all these supermoons 🤔 i mean dont get me wrong its cool and all but like what about the actual problems we should be focusing on? climate change, social inequality, you know the deal 🙄 still makes for a pretty lit night sky tho

Mmmm 🌕 I'm soooo hyped for this supermoon thingy!!! It's gonna be like, totally epic 💥! I mean, can you imagine seeing a full moon that's like 14% bigger than usual? 🤯 Mind blown! Not to mention it'll be like 30% brighter too 💫! Easy peasy, just gotta get outside and gaze up at the sky 🌃. Some ppl might say tides will change or whatever 🤷‍♀️ but I don't care about that stuff 🙅‍♂️. The moon is gonna put on a show 🎉 and it's our chance to appreciate its beauty in all its glory 🌈. Bring on the autumn nights and let's get stargazing 👍!

🌕 I'm so stoked for this supermoon! I was thinking of heading out to my grandparents' house in the country on Wednesday night to get a good spot. They've got these sweet binoculars that'll help me spot it from like, 100 miles away. The last time we saw a supermoon, I remember taking so many pics with my iPhone 13 and trying to edit them to make it look like it was moving 🤪. Anyone else planning on catching this? It's gonna be lit! 😎

The real question is, why are we only just now recognizing the importance of supermoons? I mean, think about it, every time there's a rare astronomical event, we're like "ooh, look at that!" But have you noticed how our politicians only make a big deal about these events when they can use them to distract us from their own failures? Like, remember the solar eclipse in 2017? That was all about how it was a "national moment of unity"... yeah right, I think it was just an excuse for Congress to pass some boring legislation. Anyway, back to supermoons - I say we should be celebrating these events more often, not just when they're rare and convenient for politicians to use as a prop 🌕

it's crazy how something so beautiful can be fleeting 🌕... like our own lives, we get this brief moment of clarity & beauty, but it slips away before we can fully grasp it. a supermoon is just that - a reminder to appreciate the present, 'cause tomorrow ain't promised 💫 and who knows when we'll have another chance like this?

omg u guys! i was literally thinking of checking out this supermoon on wednesday nite 🌕👀... like is it gonna be even noticeable or can u just spot it w/ ur naked eye? and btw, 222k miles away from earth?? that's CRAZY!!! 💫 how come we don't notice the moon getting bigger or smaller all the time tho? i thought it was always in its regular orbit 🤔🌠

I'M SO STOKED FOR THIS NOVEMBER SUPERMOON!!! IT'S GOING TO BE SO COOL TO SEE THE MOON LOOKIN LIKE THAT!!! I MEAN, I KNOW IT'S NOT A BIG DEAL IN terms of causing higher tides or whatever, BUT IT'S JUST SO AWESOME TO HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE SOMETHING REALLY UNIQUE IN THE SKY 🌕💫. AND I LOVE HOW IT MIGHT BE THE PERFECT TIME FOR PEOPLE TO GET OUT AND APPRECIATE NATURE, YOU KNOW? IT'S NOT EVERY DAY WE GET TO STOP AND THINK ABOUT HOW SMALL WE ARE IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS 🤯. ANYWAY, WHO'S READY FOR A SUPERMOON PARTY?! 🎉

its gonna be sick! 🚀 supermoons are so underrated, but they're literally just like that - super cool. did u know nov's full moon is about 14% bigger & 30% brighter than usual? thats wild! 🤯 and yeah, clear skies r a must. i've heard some ppl say its harder to spot w/o binoculars or a telescope, but honestly, just grab a chair outside & enjoy the show! 🌃👍 stats: last nov supermoon was 15% larger & 25% brighter than usual. and did u know we're about 90% of the way through our year in review? 2024 was wild 🤯
