NFL: Baltimore Ravens sack John Harbaugh after 18 years as head coach

The Baltimore Ravens have sacked head coach John Harbaugh after 18 years in charge, following a dismal season that saw the team fail to qualify for the NFL playoffs.

Harbaugh is the fifth coach to be let go since the end of the regular season on Sunday when the Ravens suffered a heartbreaking defeat at home against division rivals Pittsburgh. Tyler Loewe missed a crucial last-second field goal, allowing Pittsburgh to snatch victory and secure their place in the playoffs.

The decision marks an unprecedented 18-year tenure for Harbaugh with the franchise, which was founded in 1996. Despite having two-time Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson at quarterback since 2018, Baltimore have only reached the AFC Championship game once since winning Super Bowl XLVII 13 years ago.

Harbaugh expressed gratitude and appreciation for his time at the Ravens, but acknowledged that this would be an "incredibly difficult decision". Harbaugh was also praised by owner Steve Bisciotti who stated that Harbaugh is a "great man of integrity".

It appears to be an unusual season in the NFL playoffs with five teams being sacked as coaches since the end of the regular season.

πŸ€” can't say I'm surprised about this one, 18 years is a looong time and things gotta change eventually. Ravens have been struggling for a bit now, and Harbaugh's gotta take some responsibility. I mean, having Lamar Jackson at QB shouldn't be enough to keep you in the playoffs every year πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Plus that missed field goal by Loewe was a killer 😱. Guess it's time for a fresh face to come in and shake things up. Wonder what'll happen next for Harbaugh, will he bounce back? 🀞

I'm still trying to process this news πŸ€”... 18 years is like, forever! I mean, John Harbaugh has been through so much with that team, it's crazy they finally made the move. I feel bad for him though, he seemed like a stand-up guy and deserved more time to turn things around πŸ˜”. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson can only take you so far, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The Ravens need someone new to shake things up and bring some fresh energy to the team. Maybe this is an opportunity for them to rebuild and come back stronger in a few years πŸ’ͺ. It's definitely not like we haven't seen this before - five coaches gone already this season, that's wild πŸŒͺ️!

πŸ€” I think it's about time they sacked John Harbaugh, I mean, 18 years is a looong time for any coach to stick around and still not get the team to a Super Bowl win. The dude's been here since '06, can't he just have one more year of rebuilding or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I don't blame Harbaugh for feeling like this is an "incredibly difficult decision" - he was stuck with some questionable decisions by Bisciotti and the front office. And yeah, it's weird that five coaches got fired in one season, maybe they're just not getting it right in the NFL πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

can't believe john harbaugh got canned after 18 yrs 🀯 he's gotta be hurtin' right now, thought he had that team gonna make a deep run πŸ’” was thinkin' about how far lamar jackson took him, two MVPs and whatnot... but i guess 17 yrs of mediocrity is just too much for anyone to handle 😐 still appreciate harbaugh's integrity tho, seems like he's a stand-up guy πŸ‘Š coachin' is tough, even the best of 'em gotta take the L sometimes 🀞 hope he finds another gig soon

omg what just happened?! 18 yrs is like, forever!!! i feel bad for john harbaugh tho, he's a great coach and all his team has been struggling lately... two-time mvp lamar jackson deserves better imo πŸ€”πŸ’” maybe they need to shake things up or try something new? coaches comin and goin seems pretty ruff right now 🏈😳

I gotta say, 18 years is like, way too long for a coach to stick around and not get results 🀯. I mean, Baltimore had Lamar Jackson, one of the best QBs in the league, but still couldn't make it to the playoffs? That's just crazy talk! πŸ™„ And now they're letting Harbaugh go? About time, imo 😊. I think it's gonna be hard for Bisciotti to find someone who can turn that franchise around, you feel me? πŸ€”

πŸ€” 18 years is a long time, but you've got to wonder if it's just been too much of a good thing. Like, does one coach really deserve that kind of longevity? I mean, I get it, Harbaugh's done some great things with the team, but 18 years is a huge chunk of change for an NFL franchise πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And with all the talent they've got on that roster, especially with Lamar Jackson under center, you'd think they should've been able to make a deeper run in the playoffs by now. Maybe it's time for some fresh blood around here? πŸ”₯

Harbaugh's 18 yrs are up, time for a change πŸ’‘. Thought he had it all - MVP QB & that Super Bowl win πŸ†. Guess even the pros can't replicate past glory πŸ˜”. Bisciotti's got a good rep, hope whoever takes over brings some wins soon ⚑️. Five coaches sacked this season? Talk about a wild ride 🎒!

Can't believe John Harbaugh got let go after 18 years πŸ˜•, I mean he's had some good seasons but that one playoff miss stung πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Baltimore always rely on Lamar Jackson to carry them and it just didn't happen this year πŸ’”. You'd think two-time MVP would bring more wins, especially with a coach of Harbaugh's experience 🀝. Guess the Ravens want a fresh face now, will be interesting to see how they rebuild πŸ‘€. And can we talk about that last-second field goal fail by Tyler Loewe 😩, was that even supposed to happen? πŸ™„

Man I'm shocked! 18 years with John Harbaugh and this is what happens? 🀯 Baltimore got some superstars like Lamar Jackson, but it seems they just can't seem to get it together when it matters most. I feel bad for Harbaugh though, he's a great coach and an even better guy according to Steve Bisciotti πŸ’•. Maybe the team needs a change of scenery or a fresh set of eyes? πŸ€” I've been following this team since they were founded back in '96 and I gotta say it's been a wild ride... but also a pretty disappointing one lately 😐

I cant believe what happened to the Ravens!! John Harbaugh was such a legendary coach, 18 years is like forever, you know? I mean, he had one super star player in Lamar Jackson and still they couldn't make it to the playoffs 🀯😬. The way they played against Pittsburgh was just heartbreaking. Tyler Loewe's missed field goal will haunt me for ages 😭. Harbaugh seems like a really cool guy though, I love that Steve Bisciotti is saying such nice things about him πŸ’•. But yeah, 5 coaches sacked in one season? what's going on in the NFL right now?! πŸ€”πŸ˜‚

I don’t usually comment but I think this season is pretty wild, you know? Five teams letting go their head coaches already and it's only December lol πŸ˜‚. Baltimore's situation seems like a tough one, they've got some talented players like Lamar Jackson but just can't seem to get over the hump. 18 years for Harbaugh is crazy, I mean what changes would you make to his system that would warrant such a drastic move? πŸ€”

I'm shocked they finally decided to let John Harbaugh go πŸ˜’. I mean, 18 years is a long time, and you'd think he'd at least make it to the Super Bowl again before now πŸ€”. And what's with all these coaches getting sacked already? It's crazy! πŸ”₯ Five teams in one season? That's just wild 🀯. But hey, I guess Harbaugh's departure is a wake-up call for the team and the organization. Maybe they need some fresh blood to turn it around πŸ’ͺ. Bisciotti's comments about Harbaugh being a "great man of integrity" are pretty standard, though πŸ™„. Can't say he didn't see this coming, though... I mean, 18 years is a looong time to be in charge πŸ•°οΈ.

πŸ˜’ I'm not surprised, to be honest... 18 years is a looong time, and you can't keep blaming the same coach for everything πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Lamar Jackson's talent is amazing, but he needs some real support around him πŸ’ͺ. Maybe it's time for some new blood in Baltimore? The Ravens' season was super disappointing, especially with that last-second defeat πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I feel bad for Harbaugh, though - it's an incredibly difficult decision πŸ™. But hey, at least the fans are getting some good content out of this πŸ˜‚. Five teams sacked as coaches since the end of the regular season? That's crazy! What's going on with the NFL this year? πŸ€”

πŸ€” can u believe it tho? 18 yrs goes by and they decide to axe harbaugh πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ still got 2 mvps on his squad lol, lamar jackson is a beast 🐯 but ravens just couldnt get it done this season πŸ˜”. i feel bad for the guy tho, he's been loyal to the team and they gave him nothing in return πŸ’”. at least steve biscotti said somethin nice about him πŸ™. weird season we're havin in the nfl playoffs with all these coaches gettin fired πŸ”₯ but u can't deny harbaugh's dedication to the ravens ❀️

Wow, 18 years is a looong time for a coach to be stuck in one job 🀯. I mean, you'd think even with a superstar QB like Lamar Jackson, they should've made it to the playoffs more often πŸ˜‚. The team's performance has been pretty meh lately... Interesting that Harbaugh is being let go after all that time, maybe they just needed a change of scenery πŸ”„.

The sudden departure of John Harbaugh from his position as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens is a paradigmatic example of the impermanence that exists at the top levels of professional sports πŸ€”. While it's not entirely unexpected, given the team's underwhelming performance this season, one can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the long tenure of Harbaugh, who had been an integral part of the franchise since its inception in 1996 πŸ’Ό.

The decision to let go of Harbaugh also raises questions about the role of leadership in sports, particularly when it comes to adapting to changing circumstances and evolving team dynamics. With a talented quarterback like Lamar Jackson at the helm, one would have expected greater success from the Ravens this season 🏈. Nonetheless, the departure of Harbaugh marks an interesting shift in the NFL landscape, where the usual power structures are being disrupted πŸ”₯.
