Though ‘Zootopia 2’ lacks original’s bite, it’s still a fun romp - Detroit Metro Times

Disney's Zootopia sequel, released in 2025, failed to recapture the bite and nuance of its critically acclaimed predecessor. While still a fun and entertaining romp for kids, it falls short in delivering an impactful story with meaningful themes.

Set shortly after the events of the original film, Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) are now officially partners at the Zootopia Police Department. As they delve into a new case involving a sweet pit viper, a sinister family of billionaire lynxes, and a lost part of the city, they must confront their own prejudices, fears, and the machinations of a city that would prefer to see them fail.

Unfortunately, the sequel relies more on chases and animal puns rather than providing nuanced storytelling with depth. The themes of gentrification, fear of the unknown, and the cold calculations of the wealthy are present but lack the emotional heft of the original.

The animation, while colorful and diverting, lacks the enveloping quality of its predecessor. The lush Rainforest District from the first film is a highlight, whereas in Zootopia 2, even with 3D, I found myself less transported to the vibrant metropolis.

Despite this, there's no hint of cynicism or cash-grabbing here. The central mystery pays homage to classic noir films like Chinatown and The Third Man, and the script genuinely loves its characters, making them three-dimensional animal cops. It may not capture the same ephemeral magic as the original, but it's still a predictable – yet enjoyable – animated adventure.

As long as these lovable anthropomorphized animals continue to teach kids about acceptance, love, and important values through their adventures, I'm more than happy to watch. Your kids and theirs should be too, even if they don't quite match the original's bite.

"Sequel fatigue is real 🤯 - Disney still got the charm, but lacked that special sauce 🔥. Still fun for kiddos, but grown-ups like me need more depth 😐." 👍

I just watched Zootopia 2 and it was like they took all the fun parts from the first movie but forgot to add the depth 💔. The new characters were cool I guess but they didn't feel as real as Judy and Nick from the first film 🤷‍♀️. And don't even get me started on the animation – it was so pretty but also kinda empty 😐. They kept mentioning the original's magic and how it was like a special thing, but honestly I just think kids love watching these characters because they're adorable and fun to watch, not necessarily for anything deeper 💕. Still, I'll take my little ones to see it with them, 'cause that's what these movies are all about, right? 🐰👪

I feel like we're living in a world where entertainment is meant to transport us, but sometimes it just feels like a series of familiar beats strung together 🤔. Disney's Zootopia 2 wants to deliver an impactful story, but it ends up feeling like a fun but shallow romp for kids, more concerned with appeasing nostalgia and familiarity than pushing the boundaries of its own world.

We need stories that challenge our assumptions, that make us feel uncomfortable and think critically about the themes they're exploring 🌎. Instead of just going through the motions, maybe we should be asking ourselves what it is we really want from our entertainment – do we just crave something familiar, or can we tolerate a little bit of discomfort for something truly meaningful?

I think this sequel gets a bad rep 🤔, people are just expecting too much after that perfect first film 🎥. It's still got heart and humor, what more can you ask for? The animation is gorgeous, I loved how they expanded on the Rainforest District 🌴. Yeah, it might not be as 'bitey' as the original but who cares? These characters are lovable, relatable, and learning valuable lessons 📚. Kids will still love watching Judy & Nick solve another wild case 🐾💡. And let's be real, sometimes sequels just aren't meant to live up to that initial spark 🔥. Still a fun ride for the whole family 👪!

tbh i was kinda expecting a 2nd installment that would at least try to live up to its predecessor... like, a sequel is always gonna have an uphill battle, but dis one feels like it's just phoning in some animal puns and chase scenes 🤷‍♀️. i mean, the animation looks super colorful tho! 🌈 can't deny that. still, there's somethin about zootopia 1 that just gets me every time... maybe its just judy & nick's banter 😊

i gotta say, i was really looking forward to zootopia 2 but it just didn't hit the same spot as the first one 🤔. i mean, the whole thing felt a bit more light-hearted and kid-friendly than the original which had some real meat to its story. and yeah, the animation's still pretty cool but it just doesn't have that wow factor like it did in 2016 👀. what really disappointed me was how it didn't explore those deeper themes as much as i wanted it to 🤷‍♀️. but hey, it's not all bad! the characters are still super lovable and the mystery is actually pretty good 😊. i'd totally take my little cousins there to watch it tho, they might get more out of it than me 😉

I dunno about this sequel 🤔... felt like it was missing that extra oomph that made the first one so special 🎥. The new case sounded interesting, but the execution just didn't quite hit the mark for me 😐. I mean, who doesn't love a good mystery? But we need those themes to really sink in and make an impact 📚. And yeah, the animation was pretty, but it wasn't as immersive as the first one 🌴. Still, these lovable animals always know how to bring a smile 😊. Guess you can never quite recreate perfection 🔥

Honestly, I was really looking forward to this sequel but it just didn't hit the mark for me... 🤔 The story felt like a rehash of the same old tropes without adding anything new or meaningful. And yeah, I loved the Rainforest District in the first film - that place was so immersive! 🌴 But here, even with all the 3D magic, it just didn't transport me to Zootopia like it used to. The animation is still super cute, don't get me wrong 😊 but it's not enough to make up for a lackluster plot. I'm happy my kids will still enjoy it, though - they love watching Judy and Nick solve mysteries! 👮‍♀️🦊

I gotta say, I was really looking forward to this sequel 🤔 but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations 😐 The first film was so fresh and innovative, with a story that still sticks with me today. This one feels like they're trying too hard to recapture the magic rather than forging its own path 🔄. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's still fun for kids, but for an adult viewer like me, it just didn't have the same depth or emotional resonance 💔

I gotta say, I was really underwhelmed by Zootopia 2 🤔...don't get me wrong, it's still super fun for the kiddos, but where's the substance? The original had this perfect blend of humor and heart, and while they tried to recapture that, it feels like they just phoned it in 😐. I mean, the themes are there, but they're not fleshed out like I think they could've been...and don't even get me started on the animation 🤷‍♂️. Still, I'll give 'em credit - the mystery's pretty solid and it's clear they loved making these characters 🦊💕...I guess you can never fully recapture lightning in a bottle 💡, but hey, as long as it's entertaining for the little ones, that's all that matters 👍.

Honestly, I was really looking forward to this sequel 🤔... but it just didn't hit the same notes as the first one 🎶. Don't get me wrong, our main couple Judy and Nick are still adorable and fun to watch 👫, but the plot felt kinda predictable and relied too much on slapstick humor 😂. The animation is pretty, no doubt about that 🌴, but it's just not as immersive as the first film. I mean, can't we get back to that wow factor? 🤷‍♀️ Still, I'm all for a good animated adventure and these lovable characters are still great at teaching kids valuable lessons 📚... just don't expect it to top the original 😊.
