Will new teachers union post give Stacy Davis Gates fresh campaign money to help Mayor Brandon Johnson?

Stacy Davis Gates' New Post Could Give Mayor Brandon Johnson Campaign Cash Boost.

Gates, a close ally of Mayor Brandon Johnson, is taking on a new role as the head of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, a move that could give her greater influence over campaign contributions to his reelection bid.

As part of this new role, Gates may have more control over how the IFT's political fund dispatches its cash – now totaling nearly $2 million – with a significant portion of it going towards Johnson's election efforts.

In recent months, the IFT has made notable campaign contributions, including its largest-ever contribution to Johnson's campaign until that point: $150,000. The fund also made donations in November 2022 and February 2023. After Johnson won his runoff election in April 2023, the IFT contributed an additional $7,000.

The CTU maintains at least two political action committees, one with nearly $2,000 on hand that's overseen by Gates, while another has more than $500,000 with other officials listed as officers. Another key player is United Working Families, where Johnson’s campaign treasurer worked for years and is heavily funded by the CTU and SEIU.

Until recently, Johnson was chairman of his own campaign fund, but now it's been taken over by a Cook County Commissioner who also works as a CTU employee. It appears that nearly 80% of the $13.6 million raised by Johnson's campaign came from organized labor and affiliated organizations between late 2022 and late 2023.

The IFT’s parent organization, the American Federation of Teachers, has given more than $2 million in campaign money to Johnson’s election efforts since 2018.

I'm telling you, this is getting sketchy 🤔. First off, Gates becomes head of the Illinois Federation of Teachers and suddenly she's got control over a big chunk of cash? That's too convenient for me 😏. I mean, what if that money was meant for something else? What if it's just a coincidence that most of Johnson's campaign donations came from organized labor? 🤑 Come on, people need to start questioning this arrangement... it feels like they're trying to buy the whole election 🤑👀

omg can you believe stacy davis gates is getting richer off mayor brandon johnson's campaign? it's like she gets a paycheck just for being his buddy lol anyway, what's up with the ctu and seiu having all this cash for johnson's campaign? shouldn't that be public info or something?

I don’t usually comment but... I think it's kinda weird that Stacy Davis Gates is taking on this new role at the Illinois Federation of Teachers and then becomes super influential over how they dispatch their campaign cash. Like, what's next? Is she gonna become the mayor or something?

I mean, I get it, if you're close to someone and have a lot of power in your field, it's natural that things would flow together, but still... $2 million is a lot of money! It feels like they're just making more and more connections between politics and unions, and while that might not be inherently bad, it makes me kinda uneasy.

It also makes me wonder how transparent everything is when it comes to these campaign contributions. Like, who's really in control here? Is Johnson still the one pulling the strings or has Gates taken over?

🤔 so mayor johnson's reelection bid is getting a boost from stacy gates' new gig at the illinois federation of teachers... like what a coincidence that his campaign is basically run by organized labor unions now 🤑 it's not like he's beholden to them or anything 💸

Aww man, this is getting a bit too much for me 🤯... Stacy Davis Gates is already such an amazing leader with the IFT, and now she's taking on even more responsibility? That's awesome! 💪 But at the same time, it's kinda concerning that her new role might give Mayor Johnson's campaign a cash boost. Like, isn't politics already complicated enough without all these connections getting in the way? 🤔 It feels like the lines are getting blurry between what's best for the city and what's best for the politicians' campaigns... ugh, it's all so stressful! 😩 Can we just focus on supporting our leaders when they do good things instead of worrying about their connections? 🙏

So this is what happens when you mix politics with labor unions 🤝🏻. Stacy Davis Gates' new role at the Illinois Federation of Teachers could definitely bring some serious cash for Mayor Brandon Johnson's reelection bid, which raises questions about the level of influence he's got over his own campaign 💸.

I mean, if the IFT has nearly $2 million to play with and most of it is going towards Johnson's election efforts, that's a pretty clear sign that organized labor is backing him hard 🤞. And let's not forget that United Working Families is heavily funded by the CTU and SEIU – basically, you've got two big players in the union world throwing their weight behind Johnson.

But what about accountability? Who's really calling the shots here? Is it Gates, Johnson, or someone else entirely? It's a bit murky, if you ask me 🤔. And what does this say about the state of campaign finance in Chicago – are we seeing more and more organized labor getting involved in local politics, which is not necessarily a bad thing...but could also lead to some interesting conflicts of interest 😏.

I'm thinking, it's not a bad thing that Stacy Davis Gates is taking on a new role at the Illinois Federation of Teachers. It shows she's dedicated to helping her state's educators. But it also raises some questions about how politics and campaign cash are mixed in our schools. I mean, what if Gates starts using her influence to push certain agendas or policies? How do we know that won't affect teachers' working conditions or students' education? 🤔👥

🤔 The way politics is played out can be super weird... so, Stacy Davis Gates just takes on this new role with the Illinois Federation of Teachers and suddenly she's got all that cash from them and it's gonna go straight into Mayor Johnson's campaign? That's a pretty convenient setup 🤑. And let's not forget about the CTU's other political committees that are basically just churning out donations to Johnson's campaign - what's up with that? It feels like organized labor is getting way too involved in local politics, and it raises some questions about who's really in charge here...

🤔 This news sounds suspiciously like a recipe for a favor-for-love situation. Stacy Davis Gates just landed a big role at the Illinois Federation of Teachers and suddenly she's got a ton of influence over how they dispense their campaign cash. That $2 million is looking like it could be a pretty sweet boost for Mayor Johnson's reelection bid. 💸 I'd want to see more transparency on where that money is coming from and who else is getting in on the action. The fact that 80% of Johnson's campaign funding comes from organized labor already raises some red flags... 🚨

🤔 This whole thing reeks of favoritism 🙅‍♂️. I mean, a mayor's ally taking on a head role at the Illinois Federation of Teachers just to funnel more cash into his campaign? It sounds like a recipe for crony capitalism 💸. And let's not forget that nearly 80% of Johnson's campaign funds came from organized labor and affiliated organizations – what a coincidence 🤷‍♀️. I'd love to see some transparency on these donations, you know? How much is the mayor's family getting out of this deal? 👀

OMG, it's like they're trying to make up for something! The CTU's political fund is basically just a tool for Brandon Johnson to get more cash. And with Gates at the helm, it's like a one-two punch to his campaign...
