In this case, however, parasites likely arrived in a passenger’s luggage or clothing.
Most of those affected were employees working at Frankfurt Airport, suggesting that even areas with strict health protocols can harbor risks. The airport’s reputation for being one of Europe’s busiest and most efficient may make its employees more susceptible to mosquito-borne illnesses due to their proximity to international travelers.
Malaria tropica, the strain involved in this outbreak, is considered the deadliest form of malaria. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications such as fluid accumulation in the lungs, neurological damage, or acute kidney failure. Experts estimate that about 20% of those affected die if the disease is not promptly treated.
The symptoms of malaria are often non-specific and resemble those of the flu: sudden high fever, chills, headaches, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rapid diagnostic tests can provide evidence of malaria in human blood, but prompt medical attention is essential to confirm this and initiate treatment.
As temperatures drop at night and the weather cools down, conditions become less favorable for mosquitoes. However, experts warn that other cases of malaria could still occur in Germany despite the cooler weather. The incubation period of Plasmodium falciparum can range from seven to 15 days, so it’s possible that more than two weeks pass between a mosquito transmitting malaria and the onset of symptoms.
To mitigate this risk, health authorities must work together with travel advisories and public awareness campaigns to ensure people consider malaria a possibility even if they haven’t traveled abroad. The Frankfurt Public Health Department has taken the first step by advising anyone who lives or works near Frankfurt Airport to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any symptoms.
