The bright lights of Las Vegas have long been a beacon for tourists and thrill-seekers. Now, the city is testing an AI-controlled lighting system near the Fremont Street Experience to shine a light on safety as well. The SecurOS Soffit system uses LED lights to follow pedestrians as they cross streets and make them more visible to drivers without causing glare or light pollution.
Over 70 American towns have already adopted this technology, but its effectiveness is still being tested in Las Vegas. The city’s decision to roll out the technology comes at a time when it is investing heavily in advanced signal technology at 16 intersections around Fremont Street. This $1.4 million project, funded by the Federal Highway Administration, aims to improve pedestrian safety.
The system can detect pedestrians’ intentions based on their eye movement, according to Erin Breen, director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Vulnerable Road Users Project. However, this raises questions about how it will handle multiple pedestrians crossing at once and whether it prioritizes traffic flow over pedestrian safety.
Mayor Shelley Berkeley has expressed skepticism about the technology’s benefits, saying “the old ways work better.” While some residents are excited about the potential of AI-controlled lighting, others are skeptical about its effectiveness. The pilot program is being closely watched to see if it will be implemented citywide and whether other cities will follow suit.
