Waymo’s announcement to launch robotaxis in Singapore by 2028 has sent shockwaves throughout the transportation industry. On closer inspection, however, this move appears to be more than just a strategic expansion into a new market.

Given Waymo’s reputation for delivering high-tech solutions, its presence is likely to elevate Singapore’s transportation infrastructure.
Critics argue that the rapid expansion of robotaxis poses a significant threat to drivers’ livelihoods. Over 70,000 taxi and private-hire car drivers in Singapore are concerned about job displacement. Siow attempted to assuage these fears by pointing out that even if every AV in the world were moved to Singapore, they would still comprise less than 10% of the total taxi and private-hire car population.
The statistic may be reassuring, but it glosses over the very real concerns of drivers who see their profession being threatened. As Waymo’s all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles begin their training phase in 2027, it is essential to consider the human impact of automation on an industry that has historically relied on human labor.
Waymo’s entry into Southeast Asia also raises questions about the region’s preparedness for this new technology. Singapore, with its reputation as a hub for innovation and experimentation, is well-positioned to navigate the challenges associated with AVs. Other countries in the region may not be as fortunate, however. Japan, for instance, has been slower to adopt AVs, with only limited pilot programs currently underway.
Japan’s rapidly declining population makes the need for robotaxis particularly pressing. As a result, Waymo’s service, set to launch in partnership with Japanese taxi app operator GO and taxi company Nihon Kotsu, is seen as a much-needed solution. However, it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to stem the tide of decline.
As Waymo expands into new markets, policymakers must prioritize the human aspect of transportation innovation. With great technological advancements come significant social implications. It is crucial that we consider the needs of all stakeholders – not just the companies driving this change.

The elephant in the room is the issue of data security and regulation. With Waymo's robotaxis collecting vast amounts of passenger data, Singapore needs to establish clear guidelines on how this information will be stored, accessed, and protected. The country's strong IP framework won't do much to prevent malicious hacking or exploitation by unscrupulous companies.
