El Niño's Impact on UK Weather

How Extreme Weather Caused by El Niño Will Affect the UK The World Meteorological Organisation has warned of a very strong El Niño event this year, which will have far reaching consequences for global communities, economies, and ecosystems.

This phenomenon is not new; the last El Niño event, from June 2023 to May 2024, brought devastating effects worldwide, including soaring temperatures, droughts, heavy rainfall and floods, and marine heatwaves that pushed coral bleaching to unprecedented levels.

The WMO's secretary General Celeste Saulo described this year's El Niño as "a massive blow to communities and economies across the world.
