100 skulls, mummified body parts found in a Pennsylvania grave robbery case: Police

Local Man Arrested After Police Uncover Massive Collection of Human Remains and Grave Robbery Ring at Abandoned Cemetery

A shocking discovery has been made at an abandoned cemetery on the outskirts of Philadelphia, where police say they have found over 100 sets of mummified human remains, including skulls, bones, and even a pacemaker still attached to one individual. The haul was made after a monthslong investigation into a string of break-ins at Mount Moriah Cemetery, which has been plagued by thefts since early November.

According to authorities, Jonathan Christ Gerlach, 34, targeted the cemetery's mausoleums and underground vaults, smashing open sealed compartments to steal human remains. The scale of his operation is staggering, with investigators finding over 100 sets of mummified hands and feet, as well as two decomposing torsos.

Gerlach was arrested on Tuesday night after police tracked him down near an abandoned cemetery. He was found carrying a crowbar and a burlap bag containing the remains of two small children, three skulls, and other bones. The officers discovered that Gerlach had been hoarding the remains in his basement, where he also stored jewelry believed to be linked to the graves.

The Delaware County District Attorney's office is still trying to understand the full extent of Gerlach's activities and why he targeted these particular victims. "Given the enormity of what we are looking at and the sheer, utter lack of reasonable explanation, it's difficult to say right now, at this juncture, exactly what took place," said District Attorney Tanner Rouse.

Gerlach has been charged with 100 counts each of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property, as well as multiple counts of desecrating a public monument, desecrating a venerated object, desecrating a historic burial place, burglary, trespassing, and theft. He is currently being held on $1 million bond.

omg this guy's obsession with human remains is wild ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’€ 100+ mummified hands & feet? that's just creepy as heck ๐Ÿ˜ณ I mean what could possibly drive someone to go through all that trouble? and the fact that he was carrying a crowbar and burlap bag with kids' remains... that's just chilling ๐Ÿ˜ฑ like, what kind of messed up person does that? ๐Ÿคช #HumanRemains #CreepyCemetery #JusticeWillBeServed

Umm... so like I don't know if I'm totally right or whatever... but isn't it kinda weird that this guy targeted the mummified hands and feet? Like, what's up with that? You'd think he'd just grab a few skulls and some bones and be done with it, you know? But nope, he had to go and collect all these... everything. And now we're talking about 100 sets of remains, which is like, whoa. ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, can you even imagine how messed up that would feel for the families of these people?

But at the same time... I don't know if I'm buying that he just did it out of curiosity or whatever. Like, why go to all this trouble? It's not like there are any rewards or anything. And what about the pacemaker and stuff? Why take those too? ๐Ÿค”

omg you guys what is wrong with people ๐Ÿคฏ i mean i feel bad for the victims and their families but come on 100+ sets of human remains like is that even possible? it's just so messed up and disturbing ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ and then to think he was just using them as props in his sick game of theft and hoarding ๐Ÿ’€ like no one is safe when you're walking through those cemeteries, it's like they say "dead men tell no tales" but i guess that's not true anymore ๐Ÿ˜“ gerlach needs to rot in prison for the rest of his life โš–๏ธ

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ this is just sick ๐Ÿ˜ท gerlach was collecting mummified hands and feet like he was collecting some weird art project ๐Ÿ‘€ i mean what's next? is it gonna be a human skeleton museum or something? ๐Ÿคฃ

ok so the police found out about his collection after they were investigating break-ins at the cemetery... which makes sense i guess. but why did he do it tho? ๐Ÿค” was he looking for some kind of proof or just really into morbid stuff? ๐Ÿ’€

anyway, 100 counts each of abuse of a corpse? that's like, a lot ๐Ÿ˜ณ gerlach is going to be in big trouble now... and the fact that they found pacemakers and kids' remains is just crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

๐Ÿคฏ This guy's obsession with human remains is just mind-boggling... I mean, what drives someone to collect and hoard body parts like that? It's not like it's a valuable treasure or anything. And the fact that he was targeting specific graves and mausoleums suggests there might be more to this story than meets the eye.

I also find it weird that he had a pacemaker attached to one of the mummified remains... what's the point of keeping that stuff? Is it some kind of twisted morbid curiosity? It's just disturbing to think about how he must have obtained all these remains and where they came from originally.

He should get a really long sentence for this, not just because of the crimes themselves, but also because of the disrespect and lack of dignity shown to the deceased. It's like he was treating their bodies like trash or something... anyway, justice will hopefully be served.

omg u guys ๐Ÿคฏ this guy is literally insane ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i cant even process how someone can do something like this to innocent people... 100+ mummified bodies in his basement? it's like something out of a horror movie ๐Ÿ’€ and the fact that he was hoarding kids' remains, skulls and bones too ๐Ÿšฎ its just...wow. i feel so bad for the families who lost loved ones at mount moriah cemetery. the investigators are still trying to understand why gerlach targeted these specific graves, but honestly, it's hard to even think about a motive that would justify such heinous crimes ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’€ this guy is like something out of a bad horror movie, smashing open mausoleums and stealing human remains... what's wrong with him?! ๐Ÿคฏ i mean, these people are just resting in peace, and he comes along and desecrates their graves... it's just disgusting. ๐Ÿ˜ท the fact that he was hoarding all these remains in his basement, like they were some kind of twisted trophies... it's just mind-boggling. ๐Ÿ’ฅ and those two small children? ๐Ÿค• my heart goes out to their families, who are probably still grieving and trying to process this horrific revelation.

i mean, the investigation is ongoing, but i'm sure it'll come out that Gerlach was targeting specific graves or families... maybe there's some kind of twisted obsession going on here. ๐Ÿง either way, he's got some serious charges against him, and i hope he spends a long time behind bars where he can't cause any more harm. ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿคฏ this is some wild stuff... thinkin about it makes you wonder what drives someone to do somethin so messed up ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Gerlach's actions are a clear example of how we shouldn't judge people based on appearances - looks can be deceivin' ๐Ÿ’”. What we don't know might be more harm than good... it's like he was livin in this world but somehow lost touch with reality ๐ŸŒ.

It's also got me thinkin about our relationship with death and the dead ๐Ÿ’€. We try to honor and respect 'em, yet some people just wanna desecrate that respect and take somethin that ain't theirs... it's like they forgot we're all human beings in this world ๐ŸŒŽ.

this guy's got some serious issues ๐Ÿคฏ... 100 sets of mummified remains is just insane, what kinda person does that? and it's not like he was a collector or something, he was just hoarding bodies for his own sick pleasure... ๐Ÿ˜ท the fact that he stole kids' remains too is just heartbreaking. and $1 million bond? seems kinda low considering the scale of this guy's crimes ๐Ÿค‘

๐Ÿคฏ I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing... like, what drives someone to collect human remains? ๐Ÿ™ˆ It's just so unsettling. I mean, 100 sets of mummified hands and feet alone is crazy! And the fact that he was hoarding them in his basement with other stolen stuff is just... no words. ๐Ÿคฏ

I'm also super curious about what might've led him to these particular graves. Was it some kind of obsession or fascination? ๐Ÿ˜• Did he have a personal connection to someone buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery? I wish we had more info on that.

But honestly, my mind is still trying to process the sheer scale and morbidness of it all. It's just so disturbing... ๐Ÿคข

I just had the craziest dream last night ๐Ÿคฏ... I was flying over the ocean with a giant squid as my copilot ๐Ÿ˜‚... we were on a mission to find the world's largest sea cucumber, and it was leading us on this wild goose chase across the globe ๐ŸŒ. Anyway, back to this news story... I mean, can you believe some people would do that to innocent graves? It's like, what even is wrong with people, right? And the fact that he had a pacemaker still attached to one of those bodies? That's just messed up ๐Ÿคฎ. But I guess it makes me think about all these old cemeteries in Philly that are being abandoned and left to decay... have you ever been to a real-life haunted house? Like, a genuine creepy abandoned place with no one around? ๐Ÿ˜…

I mean this has got to be one of the craziest cases I've ever seen ๐Ÿคฏ. The dude's got 100+ sets of mummified hands and feet... it's like something out of a horror movie! ๐ŸŽƒ And he was doing all this in some abandoned cemetery? What's even more shocking is that the pacemaker on one of the bodies was still attached, can you believe that? ๐Ÿ’€

According to my research, the average person who gets cremated or buried without any medical devices still attached has a 99% chance of having their pacemaker removed post-mortem... this guy must've been a real weirdo ๐Ÿคช. Anyway, stats-wise, it looks like Gerlach's operation was quite profitable - assuming he sold his stolen goods, he could've made around $500k - $1 million easy ๐Ÿ’ธ.

Here's a chart to give you an idea of the scope:

Human Remains: 100+ sets
Skulls: 3
Torsos: 2
Small Children: 2
Bones: Hundreds

And here's a timeline of Gerlach's crimes:

Early November - Mount Moriah Cemetery starts experiencing break-ins
Monthslong investigation - police track down Gerlach's hideout
Tuesday night - Gerlach is arrested with evidence in hand ๐Ÿš”

Ugh, just got done reading about the latest cemetery break-in ๐Ÿ™„... can't even wrap my head around it - over 100 sets of mummified human remains? Like, what's next? Treasure hunting in a landfill? ๐Ÿ˜‚ And seriously, who hoards human bones and skulls? It's not like they're some exotic collectible item ๐Ÿคฏ. The worst part is those poor families who are left with nothing but memories... Gerlach's 'collection' is literally just a bunch of dead people's stuff... he should be paying the families or, I don't know, using his 'treasures' to make amends? Anyway, hope he gets max bond and spends the next 20 years in solitary ๐Ÿšซ.

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, what's the deal with people collecting human remains? It's just so... wrong ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Like, I get it, some people might find it morbidly fascinating or whatever, but come on! Those are actual human bodies we're talking about here ๐Ÿ’€. And for what? So they can hoard them in their basement like some kind of twisted taxidermy collector ๐Ÿป? It's just so... creepy ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

And the fact that he targeted a cemetery is just... ugh ๐Ÿคข. I mean, think about all those families who actually loved and lost their family members there, and now his actions are ruining the dignity of an entire community ๐Ÿšซ. And don't even get me started on the poor kids' remains in that burlap bag ๐Ÿค•.

I just hope the authorities can figure out what motivated him to do this stuff, because right now it's just a huge mystery with no clear explanation ๐Ÿค”. But one thing's for sure: he's going down for this ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

OMG, can you even believe this guy's audacity?! ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, 100 sets of mummified human remains? That's just crazy! It's like he thought he was some kinda collector or somethin' ๐Ÿ˜‚ And to think he was smokin' hot jewelry found in his basement too... yikes! ๐Ÿšฎ The whole thing is just so gross and disturbing. I don't know how he could've rationalized takin' people's loved ones like that, but it's clear he thought he could get away with it. I'm all for bringin' the heat on this guy and makin' sure he faces justice ๐Ÿค

omg what is wrong with people ๐Ÿคฏ like how does one even get into collecting human remains ?? ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ‘บ Gerlach's basement was literally just a warehouse for his dark collection of dead bodies ๐Ÿ’€ and kids' stuff too ๐Ÿ˜” i mean, I can see why they'd be trying to figure out what motivated him but honestly it sounds like he just had no shame whatsoever ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ did he even care that these were people's families who were left behind? ๐Ÿค• this is seriously disturbing news ๐Ÿ‘ป
