3,000 jobs at risk unless MoD signs helicopter order, sources say

UK's Helicopter Factory Hangs by Thread as MoD Deadline Looms

The future of around 3,000 jobs at a crucial UK military helicopter factory hangs in the balance, with industry sources warning that failure to secure a lucrative Β£1bn order within weeks could lead to its closure. Leonardo Helicopters, the Italian-owned firm behind the former Westland factory in Yeovil, Somerset, is under pressure from MoD to finalize an agreement on the "new medium helicopter" contract by March.

The bid process has been marred by delays, with some sources suggesting that the MoD's promised deadline for making a decision is now slipping further away. With just weeks left before the bid's "best and final offer" expires, Leonardo is growing increasingly desperate for clarity on whether it has won the deal. Insiders fear that if this doesn't materialize, the company will be forced to restart the entire process, which would leave its supply chain - and therefore the factory - in chaos.

In a letter to defence secretary John Healey last month, Leonardo's CEO Roberto Cingolani warned that any delay or cancellation of the contract would force a reevaluation of the company's UK strategy. The current uncertainty has already had a significant impact on workers at the Yeovil plant, who are left wondering what their future holds while the government dithers and delays.

The situation is further complicated by the lack of transparency from the MoD, which has been criticized for its failure to release details of the proposed defence investment plan. While ministers have pledged to boost defence spending in light of the increased threat from Russia, the delay in announcing a specific plan has left industry experts frustrated.

The Unite union's general secretary Sharon Graham has expressed her concerns about the future of Leonardo workers in Yeovil, warning that they must be given clarity on whether their jobs are at risk. "This uncertainty must end by confirming the order for medium-lift helicopters," she said.

Despite the pressure from industry, the MoD remains tight-lipped about its plans for the new helicopter contract. A spokesperson simply stated that the UK's defence budget is rising to record levels and that demands on defence are increasing due to growing Russian aggression. However, with just weeks left before the deadline for the bid, it remains to be seen whether Leonardo will secure the deal it so desperately needs to avoid closure.

omg this is crazy 🀯 3k jobs at stake and no one knows what's going on 😬 like how can u not give ppl clarity on their future? πŸ’Ό it's all about saving a buck, not people's livelihoods πŸ€‘ and btw why r they being so secretive about the defence plan 🀐 just tell us if ur gonna save the factory or not πŸ™„

omg lol what a mess 3k jobs at stake rn 🀯 i feel bad 4 the ppl w8ing answers from gov πŸ™„ cant they jus give us some clarity?? πŸ€” tho why r they being so secretive bout dis? its like dey dont want us 2 no what's goin on 🀐 1bn order or bust, that's the diff b/w stayin open & closin down πŸ’Έ hope leonardo gets de deal, ppl r countin on dem 😬

Ugh, this is a total mess πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ! I mean, come on MoD, get your act together already! A Β£1bn order that's due in weeks and you're still messing around? That's not how contracts work, guys! Leonardo Helicopters has been playing by the rules, sending out their best bid, and what do they get? Radio silence. πŸ—£οΈ

And don't even get me started on the lack of transparency 🀐. You can't just promise to boost defence spending without giving us any details, that's not how it works! Industry experts are frustrated, workers are worried, and you're still being tight-lipped about it all? Not cool, MoD πŸ˜’.

I think Leonardo is right to say that they need clarity on whether their jobs are at risk 🀝. We can't just assume that everything will magically work out because the government says so. Give us some real news for once! ⏰

OMG πŸ€• this is really stressful for those workers at the factory in Yeovil... I can imagine how scary it must be not knowing if their jobs are safe after all these delays and uncertainty 😩. The lack of transparency from the MoD is just adding to the frustration, it's like they're keeping everyone in the dark on purpose 🀯. I hope Leonardo gets that Β£1bn order soon so those workers can finally get some answers and maybe even breathe a sigh of relief πŸ’•.

Ugh, can't believe this 🀯... UK MoD is being super secretive about their plans for new helicopter contract and it's affecting so many lives πŸ’”. Like, 3k jobs at stake and still no clarity on whether Leonardo will get the order? 🚨 It's not just about the factory in Yeovil, it's about the people who are going to lose their jobs 😒. And what's with all these delays? Can't they just make a decision already? 🀯 I mean, I know transparency is key, but come on MoD... give us some answers! πŸ’¬

omg u guys dont 4get leonardo helicopters 🚁 their factory in yeovil is literally hanging by a thread rn its like 3k jobs at stake 😱 i cant even imagine if they close down like thats all the ppl who work there r counting on that contract 2 come thru for them ASAP pls modyourmind dont keep us in suspense lol u gotta give em some clarity or else we'll be stuck with a bunch of upset workers 🀯

idk what's going on with this uk helicopter factory πŸ€”... i mean, 3k jobs are at stake and they're still trying to get a Β£1bn order? it feels like the gov is just messing around and not giving anyone any straight answers πŸ™„... all we know is that they've been quiet about their defence investment plan 🀐... can't they just give us some transparency for once? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ also, why do we need to keep restarting this bid process every few months? it's like they're not even trying to make a decision πŸ™ˆ... and now the company is growing desperate, workers are worried about their future... what's the point of having a defence budget if you can't even give people clarity on their jobs? πŸ˜•

ugh i know this thread is days old but like come on brits dont u guys have a handle on things by now? its been 3k jobs at risk and still no word from the mod? what if leo does get that contract but then some other country wins out? wouldnt u rather have that security in place sooner rather than later?

i guess im just gonna say it because someone needs to - wheres the plan here? u guys are talking about russia and increasing defence spending but where is the actual plan? transparency anyone?

OMG, can't believe this 🀯! Like 3k jobs at stake and MoD is being all secretive about it πŸ˜’. It's not like they're even giving any hints about what's going on... just "demanding" more defense spending but no actual plan πŸ“Š. I mean, who gets that kind of info? The Unite union is right tho, gotta give those workers some clarity ASAP πŸ’―! Leonardo's CEO sounds super desperate too πŸ€”. Like, can't they just make a deal already?! This whole thing is giving me the anxiety 😬...

I'm really worried about the future of those 3,000 jobs πŸ€•. It's like, the MoD is all secretive about their plans and that's just creating more uncertainty for the workers at Yeovil factory πŸ’”. I mean, can't they just give them some clear answers? Like, what's going on with this Β£1bn order? Are we really expected to wait around for weeks without knowing if our jobs are safe? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's not right. The lack of transparency from the MoD is infuriating 😑. We need to know what's going on so we can plan for the future πŸ“. And what's with all these delays and last-minute changes? It's like they're trying to keep everyone in limbo πŸ’”. Come on, let's get some clarity here! πŸ‘€

omg, this is like totally stressful for those 3k people working at the helicopter factory 🀯! if they don't get that Β£1bn order by march, the whole thing could shut down πŸ’”. i feel bad for the workers who are already worried about their future jobs. can't the gov just give them some clarity already? like, what's going on with this defence investment plan? it's all so secretive 🀫. and now leonardo's ceo is threatening to reevaluate their uk strategy if things don't go through... that's not good news for the factory πŸ“‰. fingers crossed they get that order and everyone can breathe a sigh of relief πŸ˜…

Ugh, can you believe this? 🀯 The UK military helicopter factory is literally hanging by a thread and no one's doing anything about it! πŸ’€ It's like they're just expecting everyone to just chill and wait for the government to figure things out. But the thing is, people's lives are at risk here - 3,000 jobs are on the line and workers are being left in the dark. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I mean, I get it, the MoD isn't exactly known for its transparency, but come on! They need to give some decent answers already! πŸ’¬ The fact that they're not even giving any specifics about the defence investment plan is just ridiculous. πŸ™„ It's like they want everyone to just guess what's going on.

And let's be real, this isn't exactly a new development. We've been hearing about delays and uncertainty for ages now. But you'd think that someone would step in and say "hold up, wait a minute"! 🚫

Anyway, I hope Leonardo gets the deal it needs or else... 😱 I don't even know what will happen to all those people's lives if they lose their jobs. It's just not right. 😞

OMG, this is insane 🀯! Like, I get it, government's gotta make tough decisions and all that, but come on, 3k jobs are on the line here! πŸ€• Can't they just give us some solid info about what's gonna happen? Leonardo's already been warned by their CEO, and now we're hearing from Unite union rep Sharon Graham... it's like, get a grip, MoD! 😩 The whole thing is just so frustrating. I mean, Russia's aggression or whatever, but that doesn't necessarily mean we gotta sacrifice our own workers for the sake of national security. πŸ’Έ It's just not right.
