A horror fan’s guide to Halloween’s next cult classics - Detroit Metro Times

Several upcoming horror movies will be the next cult classics for Halloween, and I'm excited to share my top picks. As a self-proclaimed horror enthusiast, I've had the pleasure of watching these films multiple times, and each one delivers an unforgettable experience.

First up is "The Guest," a thrilling action-horror film that seamlessly blends elements of "The Terminator" and "Halloween." The movie follows David Collins, a veteran played by Dan Stevens, as he visits his deceased best friend's family, only to uncover a sinister plot. With its breakneck pace and intense action sequences, this film is perfect for showing with friends who can handle the intensity.

Next on my list is "The Descent," a claustrophobic horror classic that will leave you breathless. This 2005 film follows a group of women on a spelunking adventure that takes a deadly turn in an underground cave system infested with terrifying creatures. Be prepared for some truly harrowing sequences that will haunt your dreams.

For fans of the cannibal genre, I highly recommend "Raw Meat," a 1980s classic that expertly balances humor and terror. The film follows a group of military men on a remote outpost in the Sierra Nevadas during the Mexican-American War, who are drawn into a dark and sinister world by a mysterious stranger. With its irreverent tone and memorable performances, this film is an absolute must-watch.

Another modern horror classic worth mentioning is "The Empty Man," a 2020 film that defies genre conventions with its unique blend of folk horror and detective thriller elements. The movie follows an FBI agent as he investigates a series of bizarre and gruesome murders linked to an ancient cult. With its slow-burning tension and pulse-pounding climax, this film will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Last but not least, I'd like to recommend "Shoplifters," a 2018 Japanese horror film from master filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa. This disturbing and haunting film follows a group of people living in poverty who are forced to confront their darkest impulses when they're drawn into a sinister world of exploitation and abuse. With its eerie atmosphere and unsettling climax, this film is sure to leave you unsettled.

These films represent some of the most exciting and unsettling horror movies on the horizon, and I'm confident that they'll become the next cult classics for Halloween enthusiasts. So grab your friends, dim the lights, and get ready to experience some truly terrifying cinema!

I'm loving this list of upcoming horror movies. One thing that caught my eye is "The Guest" being compared to "The Terminator". I mean, I know they're both action-packed, but isn't "The Terminator" more sci-fi? Either way, it sounds like a thrilling ride! 🤯

As for the others, I'm really intrigued by "Raw Meat". A 1980s horror classic that balances humor and terror? That's right up my alley. And have you seen "The Empty Man"? I've heard it's super unsettling... 💀

But what got me thinking is how some of these movies are pushing the boundaries of horror. Like, "Shoplifters" might not be a traditional horror film, but it's still so effective at creating unease. It's like, who needs jump scares when you can just make people feel uncomfortable? 😳

OMG u guys need to watch these new horror faves 4 Halloween 🎃🍫 "The Guest" is like Terminator meets Halloween so intense!! 😱 then there's "The Descent" which will literally give u nightmares u won't b able 2 sleep 🤯. I'm also loving "Raw Meat" from the 80s it's so funny & scary at the same time lol! 👍

OMG, I'm so down for a scary movie marathon this Halloween 🎃🍿! I've seen all of these movies at least 3 times already, but still can't get enough of them 😂. I think "The Descent" is like, the scariest movie ever - it's just so claustrophobic and intense 🤯. And "Raw Meat" is hilarious... I love how over-the-top it is 🤣. But, tbh, I'm a bit curious about "Shoplifters"... I've heard great things about Kiyoshi Kurosawa and his ability to create super unsettling vibes 👻. Anyone else seen these movies? Have any recs for me? 😁

omg i completely agree with u about shoplifters its like my heart is still racing after watching it for the 3rd time lol i mean whats not to love about a movie that just makes u feel so uncomfortable & uneasy? its like kiyoshi kurosawa is speaking straight to ur soul or something 🤯 anyway back to these horror movies u mentioned... i think the guest would be my top pick too, idk how dan stevens can play such an intense character without being able to show his emotions lol but that breakneck pace tho its like u never know whats gonna happen next 💥

I gotta say, 2025 is gonna be a wild year for horror flicks 😱🎃. With so many great movies lined up, I'm low-key hyped to see what's in store 🤔. "The Guest" and "Raw Meat" are def on my radar - those action-packed thrillers sound like the perfect way to get your adrenaline pumping 🏀💥. And for all you folk horror fans out there, "The Empty Man" is shaping up to be a real game-changer 👻🔍. But honestly, I'm also super curious about that Japanese thriller "Shoplifters" - Kiyoshi Kurosawa's track record speaks for itself 🤫💀. Overall, 2025 is gonna be an epic year for horror enthusiasts - mark my words! 😏

"The Guest" is like a non-stop action movie with killer vibes 🎥💀. Love how it blends "Terminator" & "Halloween" elements, makes you feel like you're in a war zone. Don't watch it if you have a weak stomach, trust me 💔

I'm stoked to see "The Descent" making a comeback - it's like, super intense and those scenes are still giving me the heebie-jeebies 🙅‍♂️. I mean, who doesn't love a good claustrophobic horror film? But what I'm not entirely sold on is how much I agree with being called a "horror classic" - it's more like... a cult favorite, right? 😊 The way it builds tension and creates this sense of dread is still on point, but maybe the term "classic" is a bit misleading for a 2005 film. Still, it's a must-watch for any horror fan! 👍

The way we consume horror movies has changed so much since I was younger 📺👻. Back then it was all about classic Universal monster flicks like Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, but now we've got these crazy modern thrillers that push the boundaries of fear. "The Guest" is like a modern day Terminator movie, which I love because it's so over-the-top 💥! And "Raw Meat" is hilarious at the same time, like a dark comedy 😂. But what really gets me is how some horror movies can just tap into your deepest anxieties and make you feel all uneasy inside 🤯. That's what makes them great. I'm also loving the way more indie filmmakers are experimenting with new styles and genres, like Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Shoplifters", which is like a psychological nightmare in every way 😳. Can't wait to see how these newer horror movies hold up over time! 👍

I think its gonna be a good year for horror movies 🎃👻 They got some awesome ones lined up for halloween, like "The Guest" which is like a mix of action and horror, super intense 🔥. And then theres "Raw Meat", that 80s classic is so underrated, its got humor and terror mixed together perfectly 🤣. I'm also lowkey excited for "The Empty Man" it sounds like a wild ride with folk horror and detective thriller elements 🕵️‍♂️.

omg i cant even imagine watching any of these old movies 🤯 its crazy how much of a difference in production quality and acting there is from like 80s/90s to now lol. idk if ill be brave enough to watch raw meat tho 😳, that one sounds super disturbing. shoplifters though? i heard so much about it 🤔 its def on my list for next halloween season 🎃👻

aww man i totally agree with you about these horror movies 🤯🎃 they're all soooo good!! "The Guest" is like whoa so intense and action-packed 💥 and "Raw Meat" has this hilarious tone that's just perfect for a fun scary movie night 🍿😂 and have you seen "The Descent"? that one gives me the heebie jeebies every time 😨 i love how all these movies take different approaches to horror but they're all so effective at scaring us 😳

I gotta say, I'm loving the vibe of these upcoming horror movies! 🎃👻 "The Guest" is a total mind-bender, with that Terminator-Halloween mashup - I can already imagine the suspenseful scenes 🤯. And for all you claustrophobia enthusiasts out there, "The Descent" is gonna be a wild ride 😨. I'm also intrigued by "Raw Meat", the 80s classic that's supposed to balance humor and terror like a pro 😂. As for modern horror, I've heard great things about "The Empty Man"... slow-burning tension is always my jam! 💀 And lastly, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Shoplifters" sounds like the ultimate unsettling experience - can't wait to dive in! 🤯

I think these picks are gonna be legit chilling for Halloween 🎃👻. I've seen "The Guest" a few times now and it's still giving me goosebumps 💀. The way they weave together action and horror is just pure genius 🤓. On the other hand, I'm not sure about "Shoplifters", I mean I know Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a master filmmaker but some of the scenes in that movie are just too intense for me...like, way too much 🙅‍♂️.
