Artes Mundi 11 review – smug, stagey, up-itself nonsense for art world wazzocks

The Artes Mundi 11 art prize has been widely criticized for its perceived lack of engagement with a mainstream audience. The exhibition, which boasts six internationally renowned artists, is spread across multiple galleries in Wales, making it difficult for visitors to experience the full range of works.

Upon visiting the National Museum Cardiff's mini-displays, the author was underwhelmed by the lack of emotional, intellectual, or aesthetic resonance from the featured artists. Their works appeared to cater solely to experts and collectors, lacking any real connection with a broader audience.

One artist, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, stands out for her thought-provoking, stuttering display of broken sentences and annoying punctuation marks. Her work continues on black columns, featuring enigmatic photographs that convey the idea that communication is difficult. However, even this standout piece appears to be inaccessible to those outside of a specific cultural circle.

In contrast, Jumana Emil Abboud's solo exhibition at Mostyn falls flat with an assemblage of half-baked tropes and hackneyed references. Her use of mystical objects and banal assertions feels staged and false.

The author suggests that Artes Mundi 11 may be trying to conceal the frailty of its offerings by dispersing them across multiple locations, daring visitors to question the curators' decisions. The exhibition's focus on high-profile artists fails to engage with a wider audience, leaving one wondering if the prize has lost touch with the mainstream.

The Artes Mundi 11 exhibition runs at various locations in Wales until March 2026. While some standout pieces are worth experiencing, the overall body of work falls short of inspiring true imagination and connection with its viewers.

omg this art show is so boring 🤯 i went to the mini-displays at Nat museum cardiff and it was like they're trying to confuse us on purpose lol some of these artists r just pretending 2 be deep but really they're just rehashing old ideas 💁‍♀️ kameelah janan rasheed tho is kinda interesting her work feels like a cry for help 😔 but even that's not that relatable 4 most peepz. jumana emil abboud's show was straight up lazy, i mean wut r u tryna say wit all them mystical objects 🤷‍♀️ artes mundi 11 needs 2 step up its game 🚀 or else ppl like me will just stick 2 youtube art vlogs 😎

omg, i gotta say, art prizes r like, super important, but sometimes u feel like they r just a buncha pretentiousness 🤷‍♀️. i went to Artes Mundi 11 and was def underwhelmed. the works just didnt speak 2 me, u no? its like, i get that not everythn is 4 everyone, but some of these pieces were soooo niche 🤪. kameelah janan rasheed's stuff was cool n all, but even she had that one piece that was like, "okay, im trying 2 say somethin here, but u might need a PhD 2 get it lol". and jumana Emil Abboud's exhibition? meh, just felt like ur grandma's attic 🤦‍♀️. i dont think the prize r tryna hide anything, they just r goin 4 a more avant-garde vibe, which isnt 4 everybodys cup n tea ☕️.

I gotta say, I went to that Artes Mundi 11 thing and was kinda underwhelmed too 🤔... Don't get me wrong, it's got some amazing artists and all that jazz, but for a museum exhibit, you'd think it'd be more accessible to everyone 🎨. Like, I saw these super cool pics from Kameelah Janan Rasheed, but even those felt kinda out of reach, you know? I mean, I'm no expert, but I felt like the exhibition was just too... high-brow 🤢. And Jumana Emil Abboud's show was straight up weird 🤪. But at the same time, I get why they chose to split it across multiple galleries - maybe that's their way of saying "hey, we know this might not be for everyone, so you can choose what you want to see" 📚... Still, if you're gonna invite all these amazing artists, you gotta make sure the exhibit feels more like a conversation than an interrogation 🤝.

im so confused about this artes mundi thing i mean i love art and all but this prize just seems like a bunch of rich ppl hanging out together 🤔 what's the point of showcasing art that's just gonna confuse or bore regular folks? i went to mostyn gallery and jumana emil abboud's exhibition was literally meh her stuff just looked like it came from a pinterest board lol meanwhile kameelah janan rasheed's work is super cool but even she's got some weird cultural references that might be hard for ppl outside wales to grasp 🤷‍♀️ maybe they should put on some more relatable art or at least make the info easy to understand?

I don't get why they even bother with an awards show if the art ain't gonna speak to everyone 🤷‍♀️. Like, I went to this Artes Mundi 11 thing in Cardiff and it was just a bunch of fancy art that didn't make any sense to me 🤔. It's all so...elitist 💁‍♀️. I mean, I get that some people might appreciate the thought-provoking stuff, but what about the rest of us? Shouldn't art be for everyone, not just a select few 🌎. And don't even get me started on the lack of emotional connection - it's like they forgot that art is supposed to make you feel something ❤️. All in all, I'd say Artes Mundi 11 was a bit of a disappointment 🤕.

i think artemundi 11 is trying to do something different, showcase big name artists in a unique way... but it feels like they lost sight of what makes art relevant to everyday people? it's like they're trying to create an exclusive club for art enthusiasts instead of making it more accessible. i mean, those stuttering sentences and enigmatic photos by kameelah janan rasheed are actually pretty thought-provoking if you take a closer look... but maybe that's just my perspective as someone who doesn't need to be spoon-fed to appreciate something 💡

I'm so confused about this whole thing 🤔... I mean, on one hand, I think Artes Mundi 11 is trying to do something real different by featuring artists who aren't super mainstream, but at the same time, it's like they're trying too hard to be all artsy and stuff 🖼️. I don't know, maybe I'm just not getting it... but to me, Kameelah Janan Rasheed's work is kinda cool, even if it can be a bit weird 🤪... and Jumana Emil Abboud's solo exhibition just feels like she's trying too hard to be edgy 😒. But then again, maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough to understand the depth of their art 🤷‍♀️... and honestly, who am I kidding? Maybe I'm just having a major identity crisis today 😂...

Ugh 🙄 I mean, what's up with these art prize exhibitions? They're always so scattered and hard to navigate. Like, Artes Mundi 11 is all over multiple galleries in Wales... good luck finding everything you want to see! 🤯 It just feels like the curators are trying to hide something from us. And don't even get me started on the artwork itself - it's all so pretentious and inaccessible. I mean, who does Kameelah Janan Rasheed think she's talking to with that stuttering display? Not exactly everyone, right? 😒

🤔 I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed in this year's Artes Mundi 11 art prize 🎨. It feels like they're trying to be too fancy and high-brow, but losing touch with the people who actually care about art 💡. I mean, come on, if you're gonna feature artists like Kameelah Janan Rasheed, shouldn't it at least have a way for regular folks to experience their work? 🤷‍♀️ I ended up just skimming over most of the exhibits in National Museum Cardiff's mini-displays... 😴. Don't get me wrong, Jumana Emil Abboud's stuff was kinda meh too 🤐.

Back in my day, we used to love art that spoke to us, not just some obscure cultural reference that only a few people would get 💬. I know, I know, art is supposed to be subjective and all that... but can't they aim for something a little more inclusive? 🤝 I'm just sayin', if you're gonna put together an art prize, it should at least try to reach the masses, not just the hipster crowd 👥.

I just got back from visiting the Artes Mundi 11 exhibition in Cardiff and I gotta say, it felt like a bit of an experience rather than an event 🤔. Don't get me wrong, there were some pieces that really stood out to me - Kameelah Janan Rasheed's work was like nothing I'd ever seen before, but yeah, it did feel a bit exclusive. Like, if you didn't know what she was getting at, you were kinda stuck 🤷‍♀️.

And don't even get me started on Jumana Emil Abboud's exhibition - it just felt like a bunch of half-baked ideas strung together 💡. I mean, I love a good mystical object as much as the next person, but when it feels forced, it doesn't feel right 🙅‍♂️.

The thing is, I think that's what happens when you try to cram too many big-name artists into one exhibition - it loses focus on actually engaging with your audience 👥. Maybe they should've done a smaller show and really explored each artist's work instead of trying to cover everything 📚?

I dont get it, why they gotta spread all these artworks across multiple galleries like that 🤯? Its like they wanna keep us from appreciating the full range of stuff on display 😐. I went to National Museum Cardiff and their mini-displays were super confusing, like what was supposed to be impactful about those tiny art pieces 📚? And yaaas Kameelah Janan Rasheed's work is fire 🔥 but even that one piece felt kinda...outta touch with me 🤷‍♀️. I mean, i get she's trying to convey some deep message but its just so much going on 😩. Jumana Emil Abbouds exhibition was just a mess 🌪️, like where did they even go wrong? Was it the location? The curation? Its all pretty meh 💔. Guess thats what happens when ur tryna impress the art elite and forget about the regular folk 👎

🤔 I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed by this year's Artes Mundi 11 art prize 🎨. It feels like they're catering too much to the "in crowd" instead of trying to break down barriers and engage the wider audience 🚫. I mean, I did check out Kameelah Janan Rasheed's work at the National Museum Cardiff, but it was kinda hard to connect with, even for someone who appreciates art 💭. And don't even get me started on Jumana Emil Abboud's solo exhibition - it just felt like a bunch of lazy references and staging 🙄. Maybe they should've focused more on creating an immersive experience that'd blow people's minds 😮? The whole thing just feels kinda...out of touch 📅. Still, some of the pieces are decent, I guess 🤷‍♂️.

omg i dont get why they need so many galleries... cant they just have like one big room or something? 🤔 i mean im all for showcasing amazing art but it sounds like some people might be missing out on the full experience because they can only see a tiny bit of each piece. and whats up with these super short mini-displays at the museum? i went to that last year and didnt really understand what was going on 😐

🤔 I agree that the Artes Mundi 11 art prize has a reputation for being snobby, but I'm not entirely convinced it's as bad as people say 🙅‍♂️. I mean, who are we to dictate what makes good art? But at the same time, I can see how some of these pieces might be confusing or inaccessible to non-experts 💡. The whole Wales thing does make it a bit hard for casual visitors to appreciate the full scope of the exhibition 📍. And yeah, that one artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed is like whoa 🤯 her work is thought-provoking, but maybe not everyone's cup of tea? I do think some pieces, like Jumana Emil Abboud's, just feel a bit...off 🔮. Still, it's all about art, right? We're supposed to take risks and challenge ourselves 🎨. Maybe that's what Artes Mundi 11 is trying to do – push boundaries 🚀.

OMG, I'm so disappointed in this art prize 🤕. I mean, I know it's supposed to be all high-end and exclusive, but like, where's the accessibility? 🙄 I've been to some weird art exhibitions before, but at least they were trying to push boundaries or something. This one just feels like a bunch of fancy stuff that only art snobs would care about 😴. And don't even get me started on the lack of emotional resonance – it's like they're speaking a whole different language 🤔. I was really looking forward to seeing some inspiring works, but it was all just a bit...meh 💔. Can someone pls explain to me why they can't just have an actual conversation with the artists instead of featuring their stuff in a bunch of tiny displays? 🤷‍♀️

omg I was there for the opening night 🤔 and honestly the venue is so huge and spread out it's like they want you to just look at the artist's names on a list instead of actually experiencing their art 🎨! I felt like I was missing half the exhibit because I didn't have time to check everything out @NationalMuseumCardiff, maybe make some mini-displays in smaller venues next time? 🤷‍♀️

and btw what's up with Kameelah Janan Rasheed's work it's soooo cool but also kinda hard to grasp for people outside of art circles 🤓 I mean I loved the broken sentences and all, but sometimes less is more, right? 💁‍♀️

Jumana Emil Abboud though... like, what were they thinking with that solo exhibition? 🙄 it felt like they just phoned it in and expected everyone to be like "oh wow mystical objects are so deep" 🤣

anyway, Artes Mundi 11 is def worth checking out if you're into art and all, but don't expect to be blown away 💥
