Brother of man who died at Pa. ICE detention center sues U.S. government

A Lawsuit Filed by Brother of Chinese Immigrant Who Died in Pa. ICE Detention Center

The US government is facing a lawsuit after the brother of a 32-year-old Chinese immigrant, Chaofeng Ge, filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking answers about his death at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Central Pennsylvania.

According to the lawsuit, Yangeng Ge received confirmation from the US Postal Service that ICE had received his request, but it was "unlawfully ignored" by the agency. The lawsuit claims that federal officials failed to provide Ge with information about the conditions of the facility where his brother was being held, including the circumstances surrounding his death.

Chaofeng Ge's body was found in a shower stall at the detention center on August 5, with a cloth wrapped around his neck and his legs and hands tied behind his back. The ICE Detainee Death Report for Ge lists that he was brought to the facility after being convicted of accessing an electronic device issued to another who did not authorize use.

However, Yangeng Ge's brother claims that this information is "highly suspect" and that he does not understand how long his brother was held at the facility. The lawsuit alleges that Ge felt isolated in the facility because no one spoke Mandarin and the staff made no effort to communicate with him.

The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief and for the agencies to release all records pertaining to Ge's detention and death. Yangeng Ge is also seeking accountability for those responsible for his brother's death, stating that he wants "justice" and "answers as to how this could have happened."

In a statement, David Rankin, a lawyer representing Ge's family, said: "The government is so committed to keeping the public in the dark about what is happening at these detention centers that it is willing to violate the law. This lawsuit calls for much-needed transparency into how the government is treating detainees."

๐Ÿ˜ก this is just awful what kind of system lets people die like that in custody?!? ๐Ÿšซ federal officials are supposed to be doing a job not ignoring human rights and life ๐Ÿคฏ ge's family deserves answers and justice for his brother's death, it's not right to leave people to suffer in silence. ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ the fact that no one spoke mandarin at the facility makes sense now, it's a recipe for disaster ๐Ÿšจ my heart goes out to yangeng ge, i hope he gets the answers and justice he's seeking ๐Ÿ’”

I feel bad for Yangeng Ge and his family ๐Ÿค•... ICE's Moshannon Valley Processing Center has a reputation for being one of the worst places to be held in the US, and now it seems like they're being held accountable ๐Ÿ˜Š. I don't think the government should've ignored Yangeng's FOIA request, that was just careless on their part ๐Ÿ‘Ž. His brother Chaofeng's death is a tragedy and I hope justice is served โš–๏ธ... ICE needs to do better in terms of transparency and communication with detainees ๐Ÿ“ž. It's also worth noting that being held in detention can be super traumatic for people, especially if they don't speak the dominant language ๐Ÿ‘ฅ... maybe we should be focusing on finding ways to support these individuals rather than just criticizing the system ๐Ÿค.

I gotta say, this whole situation with Chaofeng Ge's death is super disturbing ๐Ÿค•. I mean, we need more info about what was going on at that detention center and how long his brother was held there. The fact that they allegedly ignored Yangeng Ge's FOIA request? That's just not right ๐Ÿ˜’.

But, I gotta question the motives of some folks here too. Can we say for sure that Ge didn't play a role in his own death? I know it sounds harsh, but we can't rule out the possibility entirely โš–๏ธ.

And what's with all this "highly suspect" business? Without concrete evidence, how can Yangeng Ge trust the authorities will give him the truth? It's like, government agencies need to be held accountable, but not at the expense of due process ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

I guess what I'm saying is... transparency is great and all, but we gotta make sure we're not jumping to conclusions or assuming the worst ๐Ÿ˜Š. We need more facts before we can start calling for justice ๐ŸŽ‰

omg ๐Ÿคฏ like i'm literally shook by this news, you guys can't believe what's going on with ICE detention centers ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜ฑ the fact that they're being sued over Chaofeng Ge's death is just...wow ๐Ÿคฏ and it gets worse, his brother Yangeng is saying he was basically tortured at the facility because no one spoke Mandarin and staff didn't care to communicate with him ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ i mean what kind of system allows that? ๐Ÿค” anyway, this lawsuit is SO needed for transparency and accountability ๐Ÿ’ฏ let's hope justice is served for Chaofeng Ge's family ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿค” I'm not buying this story. How do we know this isn't just some desperate attempt to get attention and a payday? The brother's claims about his brother being held in isolation because no one spoke Mandarin sounds fishy. What if Ge was just making it up to get sympathy? And what about the "highly suspect" info about his brother's conviction? Has there been any investigation into that? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

This is just horrific... ICE needs to get its act together ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. A 32-year-old man, already vulnerable as an immigrant, and then he's stuck in that facility with no one speaking his language? That's unacceptable. The government should be ashamed of itself for putting people through this. They need to release all those records ASAP so we can finally know the truth about what happened to Chaofeng Ge. My heart goes out to Yangeng Ge and his family, I hope they get some justice ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿค• this is so messed up... ICE detaining center in Pa and they just ignore the family's FOIA request ๐Ÿ™„, Yangeng Ge is still trying to get answers about his brother Chaofeng's death which was all shrouded in mystery ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ, I mean, what even happened to his brother? ๐Ÿค” And now he's trying to get justice and transparency from the government ๐ŸŽฏ, it's like they're hiding something ๐Ÿšซ, David Rankin is right, the government needs to come clean about what's going on in those detention centers ๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ ICE gotta do better, fam ๐Ÿค•! When humans die in custody, we need answers ๐Ÿ’ก. The gov't can't just sweep it under the rug ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ. Yangeng Ge's family deserves justice โš–๏ธ and transparency ๐Ÿ“Š. ICE Detention Centers are like prisons for people who don't deserve that ๐Ÿ˜จ. We gotta hold our leaders accountable ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ! ๐Ÿ’•

I'm calling BS on this one ๐Ÿค”. I mean, a Freedom of Information Act request gets "unlawfully ignored" by ICE? That's like saying the sun doesn't rise in the East ๐Ÿ˜‚. Someone's gotta get to the bottom of this, and I hope it's not just some generic law firm making money off a grieving family.

I'm all for transparency, but if a FOIA request takes three years to be responded to (or in this case, ignored), something fishy is going on ๐ŸŸ. And what's up with the circumstances of Chaofeng Ge's death? A cloth around his neck and legs tied behind his back? Sounds like self-inflicted harm to me ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I need some sources on this one, folks! Where's the investigation? Who's looking into this? The government's gonna have a hard time explaining themselves if they can't even provide basic info about their own detention center operations ๐Ÿ’ป.

I'm so sad to hear about Chaofeng Ge's death ๐Ÿค•... ICE should be more transparent about these things, you know? It's like they're hiding something from us and that's not right. I mean, we all know how important it is to speak up when someone's rights are being violated. Yangeng Ge sounds like a super dedicated brother who just wants answers ๐Ÿค”... I feel for him, he deserves some justice ๐Ÿ’ฏ. It's crazy that the government thinks they can just ignore the law and get away with it ๐Ÿ˜’. We need more people speaking out against this kind of thing to make sure everyone knows what's going on.

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ this is so not right! ICE Detention Center is like, a total black box ๐Ÿšซ and now we're talking about someone dying in there? It's insane! I don't think it's cool that they ignored Yangeng Ge's FOIA request and didn't give him any info about his brother's death or the conditions of the facility. Like, what even is going on in those places?! ๐Ÿค” And now his family has to fight for answers like this is some kind of game ๐Ÿ˜ก. We need more transparency and accountability, you know? ๐Ÿค

I just watched this crazy documentary on beekeeping last night and I'm still thinking about how those guys are so chill, you know? Like, they're basically just sitting there with their bees, waiting for them to make honey. It's almost like a meditation. And have you ever tried it? It's super relaxing! Anyway, back to this detention center stuff... what's up with these facilities, though? Are they even safe?

omg have you guys ever had one of those weird dreams where you're trying to find your way back home but everything feels so familiar yet super confusing lol anyway back to this news thingy... I was thinking, have you ever tried those new avocado toast places that just opened up downtown? like, I know they're all the rage now but seriously, who thought putting mashed up green stuff on toasted bread was a good idea? ๐Ÿ˜‚ idk what's so special about avocados ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿค” this whole thing smells like a cover-up ๐Ÿšซ to me. if they're really worried about being transparent, why are they ignoring yangeng's freedom of info act request? ๐Ÿ™„ it just seems like another example of the us gov't trying to sweep stuff under the rug ๐Ÿ’ฉ and not take responsibility for their actions ๐Ÿ‘Ž

OMG, this is so heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•! I mean, can't you even imagine being stuck in a place where no one speaks your language and they're not trying to help you? It's like, what kind of "system" does that?! The fact that Chaofeng Ge's brother Yangeng was left in the dark about his brother's situation is just awful ๐Ÿคฏ. I'm sending all my positive vibes to Yangeng and his family for taking action and demanding justice ๐Ÿ’ช. They need answers and accountability, and they deserve it! The government needs to step up their game and treat people with dignity and respect, regardless of where they come from or what language they speak โค๏ธ.

man this is really sad ๐Ÿค•... i mean i dont know what's going on with our immigration system, but its clear we need more accountability ๐Ÿค. my cousin's friend has a family member who was detained once and they said it was super harsh, no one could speak their language, no comfort food... how can you expect them to be treated right? ๐Ÿค” i remember reading about this stuff and i'm like why isnt anyone speaking up? ๐Ÿ’ฌ we need more transparency in these detention centers, its just common decency ๐Ÿ™.

just heard about this new lawsuit filed by Yangeng Ge's brother and its super worrying ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’”, like how can we expect transparency when our gov is so secretive about detention centers? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘ฎ ICE needs to come clean about what happened to Chaofeng Ge. #JusticeForChaofeng #TransparencyNow #ICEAccountability ๐Ÿ’ช

this is just great ๐Ÿ™„, another opportunity for the US government to show off its 'transparency' and 'accountability'. newsflash: we all know that's not gonna happen ๐Ÿšซ. but hey, at least some dude is trying to get answers about his bro's dodgy death in ICE detention ๐Ÿ‘. and honestly, can't blame him - it's pretty messed up that the agency just ignored a FOIA request like that ๐Ÿคฏ. the fact that they were trying to cover their tracks makes me want to gag ๐Ÿ’€. but I guess this lawsuit might be a good start for some actual change... maybe ๐Ÿคž?

this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•, i mean a brother is left with no answers after his sibling dies in ICE detention center and now he's fighting for justice... it's like, what even are we doing to prevent these kinds of deaths? ๐Ÿคฏ the fact that they ignored his FOIA request is just insane - who does that? ๐Ÿ™„ i'm all for transparency and accountability, especially when it comes to our government's treatment of people in detention centers. let's get some real answers here... maybe a reform or two is needed? ๐Ÿ’ก
