Brother of man who died at Pa. ICE detention center sues U.S. government

Family of Chinese Immigrant Who Died at Pa. ICE Detention Center Sues US Government Over Death and Lack of Transparency

The family of a 32-year-old Chinese immigrant who died under mysterious circumstances at a Central Pennsylvania Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center has filed a lawsuit against the US government, alleging that federal officials ignored their Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for information about his death.

Chaofeng Ge was found dead in a shower stall at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center on August 5. According to ICE's Detainee Death Report, Ge was held at the facility for several months after being convicted of accessing an electronic device issued to another person without authorization. However, the family's lawyer, David Rankin, disputes this information, stating that his client believes Ge was held at the facility for "a number of months" and claims that the reported timeline is "highly suspect."

The lawsuit alleges that Ge felt isolated in the facility because no one spoke Mandarin and the staff made no effort to communicate with him. Yangeng Ge, Chaofeng's brother, filed a FOIA request on September 9 seeking information about his brother's detention, including details about the conditions of the facility, treatment by personnel, and the circumstances of his death.

Despite receiving confirmation from the US Postal Service that ICE received the request, Ge claimed it was "unlawfully ignored" because the agency was required to inform him within 20 days whether they would comply. The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief and requires the agencies to release all records pertaining to Chaofeng's detention and death.

Ge's family is seeking justice, answers about how his brother died, and accountability for those responsible. The case highlights concerns over transparency in US government treatment of detainees and the need for greater accountability in cases of detainee deaths.

omg can u believe how they treated chaofeng? ๐Ÿคฏ i was at that ice facility in philly last year and it freaked me out, all those ppl locked up without any hope or freedom. anyway, i was just thinking about my fave food the other day... have u tried those new plant-based donuts from dunkin'? they're so good! ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ‘Œ my sis told me to try the strawberry flavor and now i'm hooked. sorry derailing the thread but ice detention centers are just so messed up... ๐Ÿค•

๐Ÿค” I'm really worried about this... what if they just don't want to know how someone died? ๐Ÿšซ I mean, isn't it our right as citizens to know when something like that happens? It's not like they're hiding anything good, you feel? ๐Ÿ˜• This family is already suffering enough with the loss of their loved one. They deserve answers! ๐Ÿ’”

I'm so sorry to hear about Chaofeng's tragic passing ๐Ÿค•. It's heartbreaking when someone's life is lost due to circumstances that are shrouded in secrecy. This lawsuit is a reminder that transparency is crucial, especially in situations where innocent lives are affected.

We can all learn from the Ge family's story - their pursuit of truth and justice is a testament to the power of standing up for what's right ๐Ÿ™. It's also important to acknowledge that language barriers can be a significant obstacle in our daily lives (or even in detention centers!). We need to recognize the importance of empathy and understanding towards those who may not share our native tongue or cultural background.

The US government's lack of transparency is concerning, but I believe this case will ultimately lead to positive change. As individuals, we can draw inspiration from Chaofeng's family's courage and resilience ๐Ÿ’ช. By demanding accountability and transparency, we're not only seeking justice for the deceased, but also promoting a culture of openness and respect for human rights.

omg this is so messed up ๐Ÿคฏ... i mean, can't you just imagine being held in a detention center with no one speaking your native language? it's like they're basically torturing people without even realizing it ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. and what really gets my goat is that the gov can just ignore an FOIA request if they want to? that's like a whole different level of corruption ๐Ÿค‘. i think this lawsuit is super necessary, though - we need more transparency and accountability in those places ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ. i hope justice is served for Chaofeng Ge's family ๐Ÿ’”. why didn't the gov just come clean about what happened to him from the start? was it really that hard to tell people the truth? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I feel so bad for this poor guy... 32 years old, just gone. I mean, can't imagine what he must've been feeling all alone in that detention center with no one speaking his language ๐Ÿค•. The fact that the government supposedly ignored his family's FOIA request is just crazy! They should be held accountable for not treating him with some basic human decency. My heart goes out to his family, they deserve answers and justice ๐Ÿ˜”.

Ugh ๐Ÿคฏ, can't believe what happened to this guy. 32 yrs old, dead in a shower stall... ๐Ÿ˜ฑ it's just crazy. I mean, I know ICE can be tough, but this is ridiculous. Family's trying to get answers, and the gov't is just ignoring them? Not cool, not cool at all ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm just worried about the conditions in these detention centers. If someone felt so isolated and alone, that's a huge red flag ๐Ÿšจ. And for what? A minor offense like accessing an electronic device without authorization? It just doesn't seem right to me ๐Ÿ˜’. The gov't needs to step up their game when it comes to transparency and accountability, especially in cases like this ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

This case is a huge deal, not just for Chaofeng's family but for anyone who's been through something similar ๐Ÿค. We need more voices speaking out about these issues, and we need change, ASAP ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

I'm so worried about this ๐Ÿค•. I mean, if they can't even be transparent about what happened to someone who was in their custody... how can we trust them? ๐Ÿ™„ It's like, yeah, sure, the FOIA request was sent and received, but that's not good enough. The family is right, Ge felt isolated and alone because of the lack of communication, and that's not okay ๐Ÿ˜”. And now his brother is dead, which is just... *sigh*... I feel so bad for him and his family. ๐Ÿค• They deserve answers and justice. This is a major red flag for me - how many other people have died in these facilities without anyone really knowing what happened? ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿ˜” I'm so sad to hear about Chaofeng Ge's tragic death at that ICE detention center. ๐Ÿค• It's absolutely appalling how his family was denied transparency and info about his time there, including what really happened to him. ๐Ÿ’” The fact that he felt isolated and alone because no one could speak Mandarin or communicate with him is just heartbreaking. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I mean, come on, how can a family be left in the dark like this? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ They're still grieving for their loved one, and they deserve answers! ๐Ÿ’ฏ The US government needs to take responsibility and make sure something like this never happens again. ๐Ÿšซ It's time for transparency and accountability, especially when it comes to the treatment of detainees. ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm all for DIY solutions and fixing things ourselves, but in cases like this, I think we need systemic change and real action from our government. ๐Ÿ’ช We can't just slap some band-aids on this issue and expect everything to be okay. ๐Ÿค• It's time for a more thoughtful approach and some serious reform. ๐Ÿ“

omg ๐Ÿคฏ can't believe this is still happening!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ a 32-yr-old guy loses his life in an ICE detention center & nobody's held accountable?!? ๐Ÿšซ that FOIA request was ignored?!? how is that even possible?!? ๐Ÿ™„ the fact that no one spoke Mandarin at the facility is mind-boggling... what kind of environment is that for someone who needs their native language to communicate?!? ๐Ÿคฏ the family's suing for justice & answers, and I'm so down for it! ๐Ÿ’ช we need more transparency in our gov't especially when it comes to treatment of detainees ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ come on, a 32-yr-old Chinese immigrant dies at an ICE detention center and the gov't thinks it's above FOIA requests? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ like, what even is the point of having a Freedom of Information Act if nobody actually follows through on it? ๐Ÿ“

anyway, I'm all for transparency, but can we get some answers here without getting bogged down in lawsuits? ๐Ÿค” ge's family is basically saying, "hey, our bro died and we want to know what happened." ๐Ÿ‘Š not asking for much. just the truth. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

ICE could've at least provided some basic info on ge's condition when he died, like how he was found dead in a shower stall... ๐Ÿšฟ does that even count as transparency? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” "The truth will set you free, but first it has to hurt." ๐Ÿ˜ข It's devastating when loved ones lose their lives in mysterious circumstances, especially when there's a lack of transparency and understanding from those in power. The government needs to take responsibility for its actions and provide answers to families who are left with so many unanswered questions ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

Man... this story is like something outta a movie ๐ŸŽฅ. You got this Chinese immigrant, Chaofeng, who just dies under mysterious circumstances at an ICE detention center... it's like, what even happened to him? ๐Ÿ˜• And then you got his family, trying to get answers and some justice for their loved one... but the government's all like "we don't wanna talk about it" ๐Ÿค.

I mean, I know we gotta be careful with our words, but come on... a guy dies in a shower stall and nobody knows what happened? That's just crazy. And now his family's got to sue the government to get some transparency? It's like, hello, people deserve to know what's going on behind closed doors ๐Ÿšช.

I don't know, man... I feel bad for Chaofeng's family, but at the same time... this is a big deal. We gotta keep pushing for accountability and transparency, especially when it comes to things like this. It's not right that they had to resort to a lawsuit just to get some answers ๐Ÿ’ฏ.
