Dublin Gothic review – epic 'losers' history' of the city traces 100 years of family life

Dublin's streets are paved with secrets, and those who dwell in the city's oldest tenements have stories to tell that would make even the most seasoned novelist blush. In Barbara Bergin's "Dublin Gothic", a sprawling epic that charts the lives of four families across 100 years, the narrative is woven from threads of trauma, resilience, and defiance.

Set against the tumultuous backdrop of Dublin's history – strikes, revolution, war, and the heroin crisis of the 1980s – this sweeping drama follows the intertwined lives of Honor Gately and her great-granddaughter, both played with compelling intensity by Sarah Morris. Born into poverty and hardship, Honor defies convention as a sex worker determined to forge her own path, while her descendant shatters the old patterns that have bound families together for generations.

As the story unfolds, a rogues' gallery of Dublin's most infamous characters comes alive on stage – James Joyce, Pádraig Pearse, Brendan Behan, and even a thinly veiled Bob Geldof, all converging in a kaleidoscope of narrative. The result is a whirlwind of energy, with 19 actors taking turns to narrate the plot and play over 120 characters.

While the ambitious scale of "Dublin Gothic" is undeniable, the production's sprawling canvas can sometimes feel overwhelming. Director Caroline Byrne struggles to manoeuvre her talented cast around Jamie Vartan's imposing set, which offers dramatic possibilities but fails to fully realise them. In the end, the show's teeming narrative leaves little room for new insights or surprises.

Despite its flaws, "Dublin Gothic" remains a gripping and atmospheric production that will captivate audiences drawn to Dublin's rich history and complex characters. For those willing to immerse themselves in this sprawling epic, the rewards are well worth the investment – and the stories that unfold on stage are as unforgettable as they are unforgettable.

omg I just watched a documentary about irish folklore and it was so fascinating 🧚‍♀️! did you know that the leprechauns are actually based on old Irish mythological creatures? anyway back to this "Dublin Gothic" thingy... I dont get why its called dublin gothic tho isnt it more like a history drama than a horror movie? and what's with all these famous irish people coming into the story 🤔, isnt it kinda weird to include them in a production about ordinary ppl?

I just saw "Dublin Gothic" 🎭 and I'm still reeling from it! The way the story weaves together all these different characters and timelines is mind-blowing 🤯... I mean, who wouldn't want to see James Joyce and Pádraig Pearse on stage at the same time? 😂 But what really got me was how the production captures the essence of Dublin's history – it's like you can smell the city's grit and determination 💪. My only gripe is that the set could've been more polished 🤔, but overall I think "Dublin Gothic" is a must-see for anyone who loves literature or history... it's like a literary time capsule that you get to experience live! 🕰️ #DublinGothic #LiteraryTheater #DublinHistory

I gotta disagree with all the hype around this show 🤔. I mean, 19 actors playing 120+ characters? Sounds like a chore to me 😴. And don't even get me started on the set – it's just a big mess of a thing that doesn't really add anything to the story. Jamie Vartan must've broken the bank on that thing 💸. But hey, if you're into that sorta thing and can sit through three hours of info-dumping, I guess "Dublin Gothic" is the show for you 📚. Just don't expect me to be impressed 😐.

I mean I've seen some big productions before but this one takes the cake 🎂! It's like a masterclass in overkill – 19 actors and all those characters? That's just crazy talk 💥. But at the same time, you can tell the cast is talented and passionate about their work, and that energy comes across on stage. I loved how they wove in all these famous Dublin figures too – it felt like a real-life episode of "Dublin's Finest" 😂.

The set design was supposed to be dramatic but honestly, it just looked like a giant mess 🤯. Jamie Vartan did a solid job with it, I'll give him that. And Sarah Morris was absolute fire as both Honor and her great-granddaughter – they totally owned those roles 🔥.

I'm not gonna lie, the pacing got a bit wonky in some parts, but you can tell the director is still figuring things out. It's all very ambitious, but sometimes I think less is more 🤷‍♀️. Still, overall it was super engaging and I'd defo go see it again – just to experience that whirlwind energy for myself 😅.

OMG, I'm so over the sprawling canvas 🤯 it's like trying to eat a 5-course meal without a plan! 🍴👀 But for real tho, I loved how the production wove together Dublin's history and the characters' stories - it was like sipping whiskey with old friends at a cozy pub 🥃. The set design by Jamie Vartan is kinda meh 🤔, but the cast's energy is infectious! 💖 And can we talk about the acting? Sarah Morris is a total boss as Honor and her great-granddaughter 👏. Still, it'd be nice to have some breathing room amidst all that drama 🎭👀

I just saw the review of "Dublin Gothic" 🤯 and I'm loving the sound of it! I mean, who wouldn't want to explore the secrets of Dublin's oldest tenements? The idea of a sweeping drama spanning 100 years is like a juicy thread that can't be pulled too fast 🔒. But what really caught my attention was the mix of infamous characters – James Joyce, Pádraig Pearse, and Bob Geldof all in one show! 🤓 I'm intrigued by the way the director tries to weave their stories together with 19 actors taking turns to narrate the plot 🌐. It's like trying to unravel a puzzle blindfolded... but hey, that's what makes it so compelling 😂

OMG u gotta check out dis new play "Dublin Gothic"!! 🤯 it's literally a sweeping epic that explores the lives of 4 families across 100 yrs 🕰️ the narrative is sooo complex but in a good way, like it's got all these layers and threads that r woven together to create this crazy story 🌈 i love how the actors r able to bring all these iconic characters to life - from James Joyce to Pádraig Pearse, its like a who's who of Dublin history 🤓 tho some parts of the set design can feel a bit overwhelming 😩 and the pacing can get slow in places 👀 but trust me, its worth it! if u love Irish history or r just looking for somethin new to watch, def check it out 💥

omg i just watched 'dublin gothic' 🤯 it's like the cast is just pouring their hearts out onto the stage!!! sarah morris is literally giving me LIFE playing honor & her great-granddaughter 🙌 but omg the set design is SOOOO overcomplicated 🗺️ jamie vartan's got some serious skills, i'll give him that 😎 but sometimes it feels like too many cooks in the kitchen, you know? 🤯 still, the show is SUPER engaging & immersive & i'm 100% here for more of those stories 💕📚

🤩 I mean, it's just like reading one of those old Irish novels back in school... you know, like Ulysses or something 📚. But, for real though, "Dublin Gothic" sounds like a right ol' mess. 100 years across four families? It's like trying to follow a long thread on a giant sweater – it's gonna get tangled up and confusing 😂. And don't even get me started on the set design... I mean, I love Jamie Vartan as much as the next person, but that set just looks like something out of a film noir movie 🎬. Still, if you're into that sorta thing, I suppose it's worth checking out 😊.

🤔 I just finished watching "Dublin Gothic" and I gotta say it's a wild ride! 🎥 The way they wove all those characters together is like trying to solve a puzzle blindfolded, but honestly it was kinda mesmerizing? 😮 The actors were on point, especially Sarah Morris as Honor Gately - she brought so much depth to her character. 🤗

But for me, the biggest issue was how it felt like they were trying to cram too much into one show. I get that Dublin's history is rich and complex, but at times I felt like I was drowning in all the stories. 🌊 Maybe it's just me, but if you're gonna go big, gotta deliver? 💪

That being said, if you're a fan of historical dramas or just want to geek out on Irish history, this show is for you! 🔥 It's like sipping a pint of Guinness and listening to a good yarn - it's got character, it's got atmosphere, and it's got a whole lot of heart. ❤️

🤯 I'm still reeling from the epicness of "Dublin Gothic" 🤯. The way it weaves together 100 years of Dublin's history is like trying to solve a massive puzzle, but in a good way 😅. The cast, oh man, they totally deliver 💥. Sarah Morris shines as Honor and her great-granddaughter, I loved watching them bring those characters to life 🎭.

The set design, though... it's like they took every possible thing that could go wrong with epic productions and said "sure, let's do all of those things at once" 😂. But despite the chaos, the energy on stage is infectious 🔥. If you're a fan of historical dramas or just love Dublin, you gotta check this out 👏.

The only thing I'd say is that it feels like they tried to pack too much into one show 🤯. Some things got lost in the shuffle, but overall, it's still an absolute wild ride 🎢

I gotta say, this "Dublin Gothic" sounds like a real wild ride 🤯! But you know what's even wilder? The economy of Ireland right now 😬. I mean, have you seen the cost of living in Dublin? It's like they're trying to make everyone who moves there poor 😩. And don't even get me started on rent control – it's like the government is just letting the big corporations take advantage of people 🤑.

But back to "Dublin Gothic" – I think what really gets my goat is how it portrays poverty and sex work as romanticized struggles for independence 💁‍♀️. Like, I get that Honor Gately's character is a strong one, but come on – the systemic issues she faces are real and complex 🤯. And don't even get me started on the lack of representation for working-class people in this production 👥.

Anyway, overall, it sounds like "Dublin Gothic" is going to be a huge hit with the Dublin crowd 🎉, but I'm just not convinced 😐.

omg i just saw this show "Dublin Gothic" and i'm SHOOK 🤯!! sarah morris is EVERYTHING as both honor and her descendant, she's got that fire 💥 and energy that pulls you in from the start! i loved how the show wove together all these iconic dublin characters, it felt like they were stepping off the page into my living room 🏠💫 bob geldof tho tho lol what a cameo! 🤣 but yooo the set is a bit much, jamie vartan needs to work on his design skills 📐😒 overall tho i'm so here for this show, it's like a wild ride through dublin's history and i am HERE. FOR. IT 💖
