Joburg Ballet: Communion of Light review – pointe-shoe prettiness and mad, itching murder

omg u gotta check out this new show by Joburg Ballet its like totally captivating! they're doing this mixed bill thing with diff styles & subjects across continents its soooo cool 🤩 i loved how they blended prettiness with darkness in some pieces like Resonance it was like, hauntingly beautiful 💀 but then there were these other bits that felt like a total mood swing lol what really stood out 2 me tho was Dada Masilo's Salome performance she just SLAYED the lead role its like so sensuous & powerful 🙌 cant wait 2 see what Dane Hurst does next for Joburg Ballet 💫

I was at that show and I gotta say, the way they mixed those different styles and subjects together was pure magic 💫! The piece by Dada Masilo's 'Salomé' had me on the edge of my seat the whole time - it's like she took all this dark energy and poured it into one killer performance 😲. And I love how the other pieces, like Dane Hurst's 'Resonance', tackled tough themes in a way that was both thought-provoking and beautiful 🌎. I mean, Monike Cristina's part in the Spanish guitar piece was seriously show-stopping - she killed it 💁‍♀️! What really struck me, though, was how the different pieces came together to create this sense of tension and release... it was like the whole audience was breathing with the dancers 🤯. Anyway, I'm still reeling from that experience - 'Communication of Light' was truly unforgettable 🔥!

I'm not sure I'd say this production has won me over just yet 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Latoya Mokoena's performance as Salomé was incredible - she really brought a sense of intensity to the role. But for me, the whole thing still feels like it's relying too heavily on 'drama' and 'emotional depth'. I mean, can we really take ballet performances at face value without questioning what's actually going on beneath the surface? 🤷‍♀️ The themes of racial antagonism and harmony in Dane Hurst's piece were interesting to watch, but sometimes felt a bit heavy-handed. And let's be real, the nostalgia factor of some of these pieces can be pretty strong... it's like they're trying too hard to be 'artistic' rather than just being good performers 💃
