King Sorrow by Joe Hill review – dragon-fired horror epic is a tour de force

Joe Hill's latest novel, King Sorrow, is a behemoth of a horror epic that will leave readers breathless and yearning for more. This sprawling tale follows six students at Rackham College in Maine who unwittingly summon the ancient, infinitely malevolent dragon King Sorrow from the Long Dark to aid them in defeating some nefarious villains.

The plot, while not entirely original, is reminiscent of Stephen King's iconic novel It, albeit with a significant twist. The students' supernatural ritual backfires, unleashing a world of terror upon themselves as they must spend their lives battling the dragon and its myriad horrors.

In a clever move, Hill leans into his familial connection to King, incorporating nods to his father's most famous works throughout the narrative. This deliberate echoism is both delightful and effective in setting the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable reading experience.

At its core, King Sorrow is a paean to the power of imagination and love. The characters are multidimensional and relatable, with each student bringing their unique personalities to the table as they navigate the increasingly dire situation. From the bookish Arthur to the beautiful Allie, no one is immune to the horrors that unfold.

Hill's masterful handling of genre is a highlight of this novel. He effortlessly shifts between thriller, dark fantasy, black-ops torture, and romance, keeping readers on their toes as the stakes escalate. The author's skill in conjuring trolls – both physical and online – and his creative deployment of magical swords add to the sense of tension and dread.

Ultimately, King Sorrow is a tour de force that will leave even the most seasoned horror fans reeling. It's a testament to Hill's writing prowess and his ability to craft a story that is both terrifying and ultimately redemptive. As the students' plight so poignantly illustrates: "You sow dragon's teeth, all you get is more dragons."

🌲 I'm not gonna lie, I was kinda stoked to dive into Joe Hill's King Sorrow 😎. The idea of a group of college kids summoning an ancient evil and having to deal with the consequences? Sounds like a horror movie dream come true 🎃! But at the same time, I was also thinking, "Uh-oh, this sounds like we're in for some serious trauma vibes 💔." And honestly, Hill delivers on that front – the stakes are high, the tension is palpable, and those characters... *sigh*... they're all so human 🤕.

The nods to Stephen King's works? Love it! 👏 Those Easter eggs had me smiling like a goofball 😆. And can I just say how impressive Hill's handling of genre is? The book's got it all: thriller, dark fantasy, romance, torture... what more could you want? 🤔 Not that I'm saying I'd want to be in those situations (eww, no thanks 😷) but, yeah. King Sorrow's a wild ride and if you're a fan of horror, you're gonna devour this book in one sitting 📚. Just don't say I didn't warn you when the dragons come for ya... 🔥

🤯 I'm loving this new horror novel by Joe Hill, King Sorrow is SO not for the faint of heart 😱 it's like he took every scary thing and mashed them together into one epic tale. I mean, I've read some intense stuff before but this one's on a whole other level 🔥. The way he weaves in nods to Stephen King's works is genius, it's like he's paying homage while still making the story feel fresh. And can we talk about how creepy the troll scene was? 😲 the author's got some serious skills when it comes to crafting tension and suspense. I'm already imagining what I'd be doing if I were one of the students stuck in that nightmare... 🤪

idk how anyone can enjoy this kinda stuff... 6 college kids tryin to summon some ancient evil & it just gets outta control lol 🤣 like they shoulda known better than to mess with somethin they don't understand. and the twists? not that original, sounds like something steve king wrote 🙄 all good horror is about relatable characters gettin torched or eaten alive 😩

I'm not sure I agree with this one 🤔...while Joe Hill's writing skills are undeniable, I think the plot summary sounds like a bunch of familiar horror tropes mashed together 🧙‍♂️. And yeah, the nod to Stephen King's It is definitely there, but is it really original? 😐 Still, I'm curious about the book now...the idea of these students summoning a malevolent dragon and having to deal with its aftermath sounds like a wild ride 💥.

idk why i still waste my time on this forum tho 🤯, every time i see another post about a new book release, it just feels like the same old conversation 📚. and can we please talk about how the formatting of the comments is still super clunky? 🤦‍♂️ it's 2025, like come on! anyway, back to king sorrow... i've already read it, btw 📖, and while i agree that joe hill is a master of his craft, i think the plot was a bit predictable. also, can someone please explain to me why we're still using this outdated comment system? 🤔 it's so last gen 💻

omg i just read this article about joe hill's new novel king sorrow 🤯 and i'm literally shook, reminds me of when i was a teenager and first got into stephen king's books - those were the days 😅. hill's nod to his dad's works is so cool, it feels like he's speaking straight to my heart ❤️. but seriously, what's with all the thrillers and dark fantasy novels coming out lately? makes me wonder if we're living in a world where horror is just our default setting 🌑. anyway, i'm totally down for diving into king sorrow and finding out if it lives up to the hype 💀.

I JUST FINISHED READING KING SORROW AND I'M STILL REELING FROM THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE!!! JOE HILL IS A GENIUS when it comes to crafting a story that's both TERRIFYING and REDEMPTIVE AT THE SAME TIME!!! 🤯 The way he weaves together multiple genres like thriller, dark fantasy, and romance is PURE MAGIC. I loved how the nods to STEPHEN KING were so subtle yet EFFECTIVE in setting the tone for the entire book. And can we talk about the CHARACTERS?! 🤩 They're so WELL-DEVELOPED and RELATABLE, I couldn't help but invest in their lives and fears as they navigate this apocalyptic nightmare 😱

I'm low-key obsessed with Joe Hill's new novel King Sorrow! I mean, I've read some crazy stuff in my time on Reddit, but this dragon-filled horror epic takes the cake 🍰👻. The way he weaves together thriller, dark fantasy, and romance is pure genius - I was totally invested in those six students' lives by the end of it 😩. And can we talk about how Joe Hill cleverly pays homage to his dad's work? It's like a masterclass in world-building 📚🔥. But what really gets me is how he explores the power of imagination and love - it's like, whoa, this book is not just scary, but also beautiful 💕. I need more Joe Hill in my life ASAP!

omg i just finished reading King Sorrow and i'm SHOOK 😲 it's like steven king went into a coma and had joe hill take over his body or something lol. seriously though, joe's nodding to his fam's works is genius - it's like he's paying homage to the master while still making this thing his own. what really got me was how much i loved all the characters, they're so relatable & flawed 🤯 arthur's book smugness had me DEAD and allie's quiet strength gave me LIFE 💪

Omg u gotta read this new book King Sorrow by Joe Hill 🤯 it's like a horror epic on steroids ! i mean its got everything thriller dark fantasy romance and torture all mixed up 🔪💀 but what really gets me is how the author uses his fam tie to Stephen King to add these super cool nods throughout the story 👍 it feels like you're reading a love letter to horror literature 📚 the characters are so well done too each one has this unique vibe that makes u root for them even when they're in the midst of all this chaos 😩 what i love most tho is how Hill weaves together all these genres to create this masterful ride 🎢

omg i'm like totally dying over joe hill's latest novel king sorrow 🤯 it's like, this epic horror tale that'll leave you breathless and yearning for more! the plot's defo not original but it's still sooo good... and i love how he nods to stephen king throughout the story - it's like a masterclass in homage 🙌

the characters are all so complex and relatable, like arthur's just trying to be book smart while dealing with all this supernatural craziness 😂 and allie's got her own demons too... but what really gets me is how hill handles genre - it's like he seamlessly weaves together thriller, fantasy, black ops torture, and romance 💀

anyway, if you're a horror fan or just looking for something that'll keep you up at night (in a good way), king sorrow is defo the book for you 📚👻

im not sure i'd say its just gonna leave readers breathless... sounds like a typical horror novel to me 🤔 think its just gonna make people wanna stay up all night with the lights on kinda thing. but hey, joe hill's got some skills so maybe ill give it a shot... dont need any more sleep anyway

I'm really loving Joe Hill's latest novel King Sorrow, it's like he's taking everything horror and fantasy have to offer and then just throwing it into a blender and hitting puree 🤯. I mean don't get me wrong, the plot isn't entirely original but what it lacks in originality makes up for in execution, it's like he's paying homage to his idol Stephen King while still managing to carve out his own unique space.

One thing that really stood out to me was how well Hill handled blending genres, I mean we're talking thriller, dark fantasy, romance all mashed together into one wild ride. It's not easy to keep the reader on their toes and it sounds like he nailed it. The way he uses magical elements and just general creepy atmosphere is masterful, I'm definitely getting a sense of foreboding whenever I think about this book.

Also, the way Hill incorporates little nods to his own work as well as King's is really cool, it adds this extra layer of depth to the story that makes it feel even more personal. And at its core, it's just a great tale about imagination and love, so if you're into that sorta thing then you'll probably devour this in one sitting 😁
