Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift review – TV detective adaptation is occasionally lethal

Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift review – a theatrical adaptation with lethal charm.

The long-running ITV series Midsomer Murders has been entertaining audiences for 28 years, with its idyllic village settings and eccentric characters. Now, the show is on tour, featuring DCI John Barnaby in a stage adaptation of Caroline Graham's source novel The Killings at Badger's Drift. Writer-director Guy Unsworth brings the popular TV series to life on the theatre stage, complete with its trademark blend of wit, charm and murder.

The play opens with a gruesome discovery - a horticulturist found dead in her kitchen - and Barnaby is tasked with uncovering the truth behind the death. The villagers are shifty and suspicious, but Unsworth's clever script ensures that no one is entirely innocent, keeping the audience guessing until the very end.

One of the standout features of the stage adaptation is its ability to bring out the witty banter between the characters, often delivered in a way that would have ITV censors quaking in their boots. The play also cleverly incorporates themes from Greek tragedy, transposing the idyllic English countryside into a dark and twisted world of murder and mayhem.

Actors Daniel Casey and Nathalie Barclay deliver strong performances as Barnaby and his long-suffering sidekick, while newcomer James Bradwell brings a welcome diversity to the role of DS Troy. The cast's ability to switch between characters quickly is impressive, with costumes and accents changing in an instant - a skill honed from years of TV experience.

Unsworth's decision to bring the show to the theatre may seem unusual, but it could be a winning formula for crime stories that have always thrived on British stages. The theatrical adaptation allows for a more intimate connection with the audience and can create a unique viewing experience that is both darkly comedic and thrilling.

As part of its UK tour, Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift offers fans a chance to delve deeper into the world of the show they love. While not essential viewing for non-fans, those who enjoy the TV series will find plenty to delight them in this theatrical adaptation - and may even discover new reasons to watch the original series again.

OMG u guys, just saw Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift on stage 🤩🎭 it was SOOO good!! DCI Barnaby is literally soooo charming 😍 and the banter between him & DS Troy is EVERYTHING 💁‍♀️👮‍♂️ i loved how they made the villagers all shifty & sus 🤔 its like, u never really know who's innocent or not... anyway, defo worth watching if u're a fan of the show 😊 👍

I went to see this stage adaptation last weekend 🎭 and I gotta say, it was super fun! The cast did an amazing job bringing the characters to life, especially Daniel Casey as DCI Barnaby 👮‍♂️ - he's got some serious wit and charm going on. The way they incorporated those Greek tragedy themes was really clever, added a whole new layer of depth to the story 🤔. And can we talk about how much I loved Nathalie Barclay's performance as Barnaby's sidekick? She totally owned that role 💁‍♀️. But what I think I liked most about it was how immersive it felt - you were literally right there with the characters, trying to figure out whodunit 🕵️‍♀️. Definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good murder mystery, even if you're not a huge fan of the TV show 😎

OMG 😍 I'm literally DYING over this stage adaptation!!! 🤯 The way they incorporated Greek tragedy into the play is SO genius 💡 and Daniel Casey and Nathalie Barclay are perfect as Barnaby and DS Troy 🤝 James Bradwell's addition to the cast is a total game changer 🎉! I love how the theatrical adaptation allows for an even closer connection with the audience - it feels like they're right there in the village with us 👀! And let's be real, the witty banter is EVERYTHING 😂 I need tickets ASAP and get this show on my calendar 📅

I'm so glad they're doing a stage version of Midsomer Murders! I mean, can you imagine anyone not wanting to see DCI Barnaby's witty one-liners live on stage? 🤣 The way they've woven in Greek tragedy themes is genius, it adds this whole other layer to the show. And I love how the actors are all switching between characters so quickly, it's like a real-life whodunit! But honestly, what really drew me to this production was how they're not shying away from the darker aspects of the show. It's not just some sanitized version for the theatre, it's got that same bite as the TV series. Bring on more shows like this, I'm so here for it! 👏

🤣 so it's like they took a bunch of quirky villagers from Midsomer Murders and put 'em on stage for a murder mystery fest 📚👻 i mean, who wouldn't want to see some awkward British village shenanigans and random deaths all in one? 😂 the fact that it's got "lethal charm" is probably just code for "this play is weirdly entertaining". 👏 also, I'm loving how they're highlighting the Greek tragedy vibes - like, isn't that what every murder mystery should be? 🤔

I just saw this stage adaptation of Midsomer Murders and I gotta say, it's a real treat 🤩! The way they've woven together the witty banter between characters is pure genius 💡. And the way they've transposed the idyllic English countryside into a dark world of murder and mayhem? Chilling 😱. The cast is on point too, especially Daniel Casey and Nathalie Barclay as Barnaby and his sidekick - their chemistry is electric 🔋. It's a great example of how theatre can take an existing show and give it new life, and I think fans of the TV series will love it. I mean, who doesn't love a good whodunit? 🤔 The only thing that surprised me was how quickly the cast could switch between characters - it's seriously impressive! 👏

This stage adaptation is like a cuppa tea on a chilly evening - it's comforting, familiar, but still packs a punch 💡. I love how they've woven together the witty banter with Greek tragedy themes - it adds this dark, twisted layer to the show that keeps you on the edge of your seat 🕵️‍♀️. The cast is on point, especially Daniel Casey and Nathalie Barclay as Barnaby and his sidekick - their chemistry is undeniable 💁‍♀️. I'm also excited to see more diverse casting in future productions like James Bradwell's DS Troy, it brings a fresh perspective 🌈. Overall, this theatrical adaptation is a great way to experience the world of Midsomer Murders in a new way, and fans of the show will devour it 😋.

🤔 I'm tellin' ya, this whole thing's fishy... Like, why did they choose The Killings at Badger's Drift for a stage play? It's not exactly the most "villagey" of episodes. And have you noticed how Daniel Casey and Nathalie Barclay are gettin' all the attention? What about the rest of the cast? 🤷‍♂️ Plus, this whole Greek tragedy thing... sounds like they're tryin' to make it seem more intense than it actually is. I mean, I know it's just a murder mystery, but can't we just stick with what we know and love? 😒

OMG, you guys! I've got the scoop on Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift 🤫! I saw it last week and it was SO good!!! Guy Unsworth did an amazing job bringing the show to life on stage - the script is witty and clever, just like the TV series. Daniel Casey and Nathalie Barclay were perfect as Barnaby and his sidekick, and James Bradwell brought a fresh vibe to DS Troy. I love how they've incorporated Greek tragedy themes into the play - it adds this dark twist to the idyllic English countryside 🌿💀. The cast's chemistry is undeniable, and the accents/costumes changes are insane! 👀 Unsworth's decision to adapt the show for the theatre might seem weird, but trust me, it's genius! You'll feel like you're right there in the village with Barnaby, solving the mystery together 🧐. If you're a fan of Midsomer Murders or just love crime stories, this is a MUST-SEE 🎭💥

I just watched the stage adaptation of Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift 🎭💀 and I gotta say, it was SOOOO good! Guy Unsworth really brought out the witty banter between the characters which had me laughing out loud 😂. The cast did an amazing job too, especially Daniel Casey as Barnaby 👍. What I loved most about this adaptation is how it took the classic TV show and turned it into a thrilling theatrical experience 🎬. It's like the perfect blend of dark comedy and suspense 🔪️. If you're a fan of Midsomer Murders or just love a good whodunit, you have to check this out! 👍

omg u guys, i just saw the midsomer murders stage play & it was SOOOO good!!! 👏🏼 the cast did an amazing job bringing the characters to life, esp Daniel Casey as barnaby 🤣 his banter with Nathalie Barclay's sidekick had me dying laughing 😂 and james bradwell's new character ds troy added such a cool vibe to the play! 🎭 i love how they incorporated greek tragedy themes into it too, it gave the whole production this dark yet twisted feel 💀 anyway, if u r a fan of midsomer murders like me, u HAVE to check out this stage play! 👍

I dont know about me but I think its kinda weird that a murder mystery is being put on stage like its a rom-com or somethin 🤔. I mean, im all for good entertainment but murder is just so... intense 🤷‍♂️. And what if the actors have to, like, actually kill each other on stage? 😱 How would they deal with that? Wouldnt it be, like, super stressful and stuff? 💁‍♀️

I'm actually kinda stoked that Midsomer Murders is hitting the stage! 🎭 I mean, who doesn't love a good murder mystery? The idea of bringing the witty banter and charming characters to life on the theatre stage sounds like it could be really fun. And I think the fact that they're incorporating themes from Greek tragedy adds an extra layer of depth to the story. It's not every day you see a show that can seamlessly blend dark humor with thrilling mystery.

But, let's be real, the real question is - will this stage adaptation be able to live up to the hype of the TV series? I mean, it's got some big shoes to fill! 🤔 Still, I'm curious to see how it turns out and if it'll be worth checking out. Maybe they've managed to create something truly special that'll make us all wonder "whodunit?" 😅

I just watched this Midsomer Murders stage adaptation and it was SO much fun 🤩! I loved how they brought out the witty banter between the characters, it was like a whole different show 😂. And I gotta say, the way they incorporated Greek tragedy themes into an idyllic English village setting was super clever 🧐. The cast did an amazing job switching between characters and I especially loved the fresh face of DS Troy 👍. For me, this theatrical adaptation is a great way to experience the show in a new way - it's like getting a deeper dive into the world of Midsomer Murders 💡. If you're a fan of the TV series or just looking for something different, I'd def recommend checking this out 🎭!

I'm so done with the 'villain' trope 🙄. The script needs more depth, give me a character that's genuinely complex instead of just being shifty and suspicious all the time. And can we talk about how ridiculous it is that DCI Barnaby gets to solve the case solo? Like, where's his sidekick when he needs them most?! 😒 And don't even get me started on the accents - I've seen more convincing performances at a local pub quiz 🤣. The Greek tragedy themes are cool and all, but let's not forget that this is still a murder mystery with a pretty convenient plot twist 🕵️‍♀️. Still, the cast seems to be having fun, and that energy is infectious 🎭.

I'm totally obsessed with the Midsomer Murders stage adaptation 🤯! The way they incorporated Greek tragedy into a dark comedy is pure genius 💡. I mean, who wouldn't want to see DCI John Barnaby bantering his way through a murder investigation? 😂 The cast is amazing too - Daniel Casey and Nathalie Barclay are like the ultimate detective duo 👮‍♂️👩🔍. And can we talk about how refreshing it is to see some diversity in the casting, especially with James Bradwell's character DS Troy? 🌈 It just feels so... British 😊. I love that they're doing this tour thing too - it's like a special treat for fans who want to dive deeper into the world of Midsomer Murders. I'm definitely going to check out their next stop! 👍

🎭 I loved how the play kept me on my toes, guessing till the very end 🤔! The way they brought out the witty banter between the characters was pure gold 💥, especially Daniel Casey's DCI John Barnaby - he stole the show 🙌! But what really impressed me was how they incorporated Greek tragedy themes into the story... it added a whole new layer of depth to the whole thing 📚. The cast was also top-notch 👏, and I loved how quickly they switched between characters on stage. Costume changes were so cool too 🔴👗! Overall, I think this theatrical adaptation is a must-see for Midsomer Murders fans... it's like a mini-series come to life 📺!

I went to see Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift on stage and I gotta say, it was a wild ride 🤯! The whole theatre was filled with people guessing whodunit until the big reveal. The actors did an amazing job bringing the characters to life - Daniel Casey as Barnaby was perfect 🔥. And can we talk about how witty the banter between the characters was? 😂 It felt like they were straight out of the TV show.

I love how the playwright incorporated elements from Greek tragedy, it added a whole new layer to the story 🤔. The set and costumes were also top-notch - I loved how the actors could switch between characters so fast 👀. All in all, it was a fantastic adaptation that brought the Midsomer Murders magic to the theatre stage 💥. If you're a fan of the show, you gotta check this out! 👍

Omg I just saw this play at my cousins sister's birthday party 🎉👯‍♀️ and I'm DYING over it!!! The guy playing Barnaby is literally sooo hot 😍 I don't know how they do it in the TV show, but on stage he's like a different person. And omg the twist at the end?!?! I didn't see it coming 🤯👻 I was literally screaming at everyone around me "Don't trust her!!" 👀😂 But what really got me was when they did that scene with the horticulturist... *sigh* my aunt cried 😭 she's such a fan of the TV show too! Anyway, if you're a Midsomer Murders fan like me, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS PLAY 🎭👏
