Rivian Is Adding Self-Driving Capability To Its EVs, Starting With The R2 SUV

Rivian, the electric vehicle maker founded by RJ Scaringe, is making a significant push into autonomous driving technology. The company plans to integrate new hardware and software into its vehicles starting with the upcoming R2 SUV model, which is expected to debut in early 2026.

According to Scaringe, the self-driving capabilities will become more robust over time, allowing drivers to hand-free drive from address to address. This means that owners can simply enter their destination on a touchscreen and trust Rivian's vehicle to take them there safely.

The technology behind Rivian's autonomous driving system is significantly advanced compared to Tesla's approach. While Tesla relies heavily on cameras, Rivian will use 65 megapixels of cameras in its vehicles, along with main central radar and individual radar units at each corner, as well as a front-facing lidar integrated into the roofline.

The increased sensor capabilities, particularly with lidar, are crucial for detecting hard objects and mapping surroundings accurately. This multi-sensor approach is commonly used by Alphabet's Waymo to ensure safe and efficient operation of robotaxis.

Despite its promising advancements in autonomous driving technology, Rivian's stock took a hit upon the announcement, falling 1.4% to $16.15 in afternoon Nasdaq trading.

RJ Scaringe's vision for Rivian is not only to enhance the driving experience but also to create a platform that could support robotaxis services. This move may help improve the brand's appeal and potentially attract new customers, especially with its base price of around $45,000, significantly lower than Rivian's competitors.

However, it remains to be seen how this technology will affect sales volume for Rivian, as the loss of federal tax credits for electric vehicles is already dampening U.S. EV demand. Nonetheless, the company's commitment to autonomous driving and its unique approach could set a new standard in the industry, making Rivian an even more formidable rival to Tesla.

I'm freaking out about this 🀯! Rivian is like the next big thing in EVs and autonomous tech. I mean, 65 megapixels of cameras? That's insane! 😲 And they're going to integrate lidar into the roofline? That's some serious tech right there πŸš€. I'm thinking about buying an R2 ASAP just because it'll be a statement piece in my driveway 🏠. The fact that RJ Scaringe is pushing for robotaxis services is genius πŸ‘. We might actually see a future where we can just hop in and trust the car to take us wherever we want πŸš—. And yeah, I know Tesla's been doing autonomous driving too, but Rivian's approach is so advanced it's like they're speaking a different language πŸ”¬. My only concern is if it'll affect sales volume, but I think it's worth taking that risk πŸ’Έ. Can't wait to see what the future holds for this company πŸš€!

I'm not sure why they're so optimistic about this... like it's gonna just magically happen overnight πŸ€”. Autonomous cars are still a pipe dream and people are gonna lose their minds when they realize how much it costs to own one of these fancy R2 SUVs... $45k is crazy for a car that can drive itself, especially with all the tech updates coming down the line. And don't even get me started on the price drop in stock... what's up with that? Do people really think this is a good thing for Rivian or are they just trying to appease the shareholders? πŸ€‘

I gotta say, this auto tech is gettin' crazy πŸ’»! I mean, Rivian's goin' all out with them 65 megapixel cameras and lidar on the roof... it's like they're tryna be the next Waymo πŸš—πŸ’¨. And you know what? I think it's about time someone did. Tesla's been gettin' a little too comfortable with their "autopilot" thing, if you ask me πŸ€”. This Rivian tech could give 'em a run for their money.

And let's talk about that price point... $45k is still pretty steep, but I'm all for it if it means I can get into an electric auto without breakin' the bank πŸ’Έ. Plus, think about how nice it'll be to just sit back and relax while Rivian's got the wheel πŸ™.

Now, I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little worried 'bout them tax credits and all that jazz... that's definitely gonna hit demand for EVs hard 🚫. But if anyone can make autonomous driving sexy again, it's RJ Scaringe and his crew πŸ’ͺ. They're like the SpaceX of electric autos, minus the whole "gonna put humans on Mars" thing 🌠... or am I? πŸ˜‰

omg i cant wait for the R2 SUV to drop πŸš—πŸ’₯ rj scaringe is literally changing the game with this autonomous driving tech!! 65 megapixels of cameras tho 😲 that's insane! and $45k base price? thats so affordable! rivian is def gonna be a top contender in the EV market πŸ†

Ugh, I'm so excited about self-driving cars πŸ™„. Like, who needs human drivers when you've got fancy sensors and lidar? Rivian's R2 SUV is going to be all about that hands-free driving life, and I'm pretty sure my coffee will still be warm when it gets me from point A to point B... probably πŸ˜‚. On a more serious note though, 65 megapixels of cameras sounds crazy, but I guess that's the difference between playing catch-up with Tesla and actually innovating πŸ€–. The $45k base price is pretty sweet, too - not everyone can afford Tesla's overpriced electric cars πŸ’Έ. Fingers crossed Rivian doesn't mess up its autonomous driving tech and ends up like a bunch of other companies that promised the world but delivered... well, let's just say "interesting" experiences πŸ˜‚.

πŸ€” I'm intrigued by this move into autonomous driving tech, but gotta wonder if it'll really make a dent in sales. They're basically building their own robotaxi service, which is a massive undertaking. I mean, think about all the regulations they'll have to navigate and the liability issues that come with self-driving cars. Not to mention the cost – $45k is already a steal for an electric vehicle, so adding autonomous capabilities on top of that might be a stretch for some buyers. Still, if anyone can make it work, Rivian's got the brains behind them (RJ Scaringe's vision, yeah!). It'll be interesting to see how this plays out...

I'm not sure about this one πŸ€”... I mean, 65 megapixels of cameras on a car? That sounds like a lot! πŸ’» But at the same time, it's cool that they're trying something new and different from Tesla. Their approach does seem more comprehensive than just relying on cameras alone. It'll be interesting to see how this affects their sales... I think it's a good move to have autonomous driving capabilities, especially with the base price being so affordable πŸ€‘. Maybe it'll help them stand out in a crowded market? But will owners really trust their cars enough to hand-free drive from address to address? That's a big ask 😬.

Man... I'm still getting used to the idea of self-driving cars πŸ€–. Reminds me of when we first started watching "Knight Rider" as kids πŸ˜‚. David Hasselhoff's KITT was so cool! Anyway, back to Rivian... I think it's awesome that they're pushing the boundaries with their technology. The more sensors they can fit in, the safer and more efficient the ride should be πŸ“ˆ. And $45,000 is a pretty sweet price point for a top-of-the-line autonomous vehicle πŸ€‘. Still not sure about the impact on sales volume though... we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out ⏰.

Ugh πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I'm so done with the lack of over-the-air updates for Rivian's software. It's like they're just expecting you to upgrade all those cameras and sensors when you buy a new car... what if your old car is still getting updates? πŸ€” That's just not a reliable way to keep software up-to-date, you know? And don't even get me started on the price of those cameras - $65 megapixels? Are they gonna break or something? πŸ˜‚

omg I'm low-key hyped about Rivian's new autonomous drive tech πŸ€–πŸ’¨ it's crazy how far they've come already! 65 megapixels of cameras and lidar sensors? that's some next-level stuff πŸš€ I mean, can you imagine just cruising around with your hands free and the car handling everything for you? 😎 it's like something out of a sci-fi movie!

and yeah, I get why Rivian's stock took a hit after the announcement πŸ€” but I think this move is gonna pay off in the long run. they're not just trying to catch up with Tesla, they're setting a new standard for the industry πŸš—πŸ’ͺ and that's something to be proud of!
