Sleeping Beauty review – York's pun-packed crowd-pleaser has a double helping of fairy dust

York Theatre Royal's Sleeping Beauty has become a Christmas tradition for many families, delivering its fifth year of slapstick comedy and crowd-pleasing entertainment. Under the guidance of veteran panto writer-producer Paul Hendy, this take on the fairytale sticks to what works, relying on an assortment of familiar set pieces, from the ghost bench to the pre-interval spectacle.

The addition of a velociraptor named Kevin, Robin Simpson as the dame Nurse Nellie, and a range of quirky characters bring new life to the traditional panto format. Simpson shines in his role as the thrice-widowed protector, bringing an unpredictable energy that keeps audiences laughing throughout the performance. The usually-rehearsed jokes can sometimes feel forced, but Simpson's quick wit always manages to salvage any potential awkwardness.

The supporting cast delivers strong performances, with Tommy Carmichael standing out in his Buttons-style role of Jangles and the comedic pairing of Jennie Dale from CBeebies and Jocasta Almgill bringing an entertaining double act as the good and bad fairies. However, some of the show's attempts to inject local flavour feel forced, relying on a few easy cracks at Hull and Nigel Farage.

The overall effect remains one of crowd-pleasing entertainment, carefully calibrated to delight families returning year after year. With its dependable formula and a steady stream of slapstick comedy, York Theatre Royal's Sleeping Beauty has once again cemented its place as a Christmas staple in the city's festive calendar.

I love how this annual panto tradition at York Theatre Royal just keeps on ticking! They really nail it with adding new twists to the classic story, like that velociraptor Kevin 🦖, and the cast delivers solid performances all around. Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie is a standout - his energy's infectious! The show still relies heavily on some tried-and-true set pieces, but hey, when you've got a formula that works, why fix it? 😊 It's great to see families returning year after year for this Christmas treat. Some of the local jokes might feel a bit forced, but overall, I'd say they do a great job bringing the community together with their slapstick comedy and good old-fashioned fun 🎄

aww that sounds like so much fun 😊🎄 i can imagine how lovely it must be to watch a panto with the family every year... paul hendy seems like a great guide for this production, and robin simpson is hilarious as nurse nellie lol i'm glad to hear he brings a lot of energy to the role 🤣 anyway, it's really sweet that they're still keeping the traditional panto format alive and well, even with some modern twists 🎅

I loved watching this panto with my fam 🎅️! They did such a great job of keeping the slapstick comedy going and Robin Simpson's performance was literally hilarious 😂! I also adored the new characters, especially that velociraptor Kevin 🦖... who wouldn't want to see a raptor in a funny costume? 💥 But, yeah, some of the jokes about Hull and Nigel Farage felt kinda forced, like they were trying too hard to be local 🤔. Still, it's all just so cheesy and fun, what more do you want from a Christmas panto?! 👍

I mean, who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned panto, right? 🤣 It's like the theatrical equivalent of a warm hug for your funny bone. I'm glad they're sticking to what works and not trying to reinvent the wheel. The addition of Kevin the velociraptor is pure genius – I mean, who wouldn't want to see a giant dinosaur in a top hat? 🦖🎩 And Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie? Classic. But, yeah, some of those local jokes felt like they were trying too hard to be "Hull-arious". Still, it's all just a fun, feel-good night out, and I'm happy to see York Theatre Royal delivering on that front. It's like the Christmas equivalent of a favourite pair of pyjamas – you know what you're getting, and it never goes out of style. 👍

🎄 I feel like sleeping beauty is still the best pantomime ever for families 🤣 Kevin the velociraptor stole my heart!!! 😂 and Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie had me dying laughing 💀👏 The cast was so talented, but that one joke about Hull just felt a bit forced 🙈. Still, it's all in good fun and perfect for a night out with the little ones 👪🎁 Can't wait to go again next year 🤞

🎭🦖 I'm loving this updated version of Sleeping Beauty at York Theatre Royal! 🤣 The addition of Kevin the velociraptor is genius 🐲, and Robin Simpson's performance as Nurse Nellie is pure comedy gold 💁‍♀️. The supporting cast is great too, especially Jennie Dale and Jocasta Almgill's fairy duo 👯‍♀️.

But yeah, I can see how some of the local jokes might feel a bit forced 🤔. It's all about finding that balance between familiarity and freshness, you know? 😊 Overall, it's just another year of slapstick fun for families to enjoy together 🎉. Can't wait to check out next year's show! 👀

I'm so confused about this Kevin velociraptor thingy... I mean, I get it, panto is all about having fun and being silly, but a raptor in the middle of Sleeping Beauty? 🤣 It sounds like they're trying to be modern and edgy or something. I love Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie though, he's hilarious! 😂 And Jennie Dale from CBeebies is so funny with Jocasta Almgill too... what's up with the easy jokes about Hull and Nigel Farage tho? 🤷‍♀️ Does anyone actually live there that gets referenced in panto? 🐱

🎭💤 I love how they mix old with new in this panto! The addition of Kevin the velociraptor is genius 😂, and Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie is pure comedy gold 💉👏. They really bring out the best in the classic format.

Here's a little ASCII art to represent my point:

The supporting cast is great, especially Tommy Carmichael and Jennie Dale 🤣. But I'm not sure about those local jokes... maybe next year they can do something more clever 😊. Overall, though, it's a classic panto that never goes out of style 🎅👏

omg i was there last yr & it was literally so much fun!!! 😂 they added kevin the velociraptor which is literally genius, i loved robin simpson as nurse nellie he's hilarious! 🤣 the whole cast did an amazing job bringing new energy to the classic panto format. i know some of the local jokes felt a bit forced but honestly it didn't ruin the show for me! 💕 i love how they stick to what works & keep the formula going strong. can't wait to see what they do next yr 🎄

I gotta say, panto season is back and it's all about having fun with the fam! I love that they've brought in some new characters like Kevin the velociraptor - hilarious! 🐉 The cast seems to have gotten the hang of it, especially Robin Simpson as Nurse Nellie. He brings this energy that just makes you laugh. However, some parts feel a bit forced, like when they're trying to be all local and poke fun at Hull (I'm not sure how well those jokes land) and Nigel Farage... I mean, come on, let's keep it light-hearted, right? 😂 Anyway, York Theatre Royal's Sleeping Beauty is definitely a Christmas tradition that works - slapstick comedy for the win! 👏

omg i went to the pantos with my fam last yr and we were literally DYING from laughing esp robin simpson as nurse nellie he was SO good!! i also loved kevin the velociraptor but like what was up with trying to make some local jokes about hull?? felt a bit forced lol anyway i'm def going back this yr with the kiddos 🤣🎅

I'm loving this year's Sleepin' Beauty show at York Theatre Royal 🎭👑! They really know how to bring out the laughs with that Nurse Nellie dame role 😂 - Robin Simpson is on fire! The new addition of Kevin the velociraptor is pure gold, who knew a T-Rex in panto would be so funny? 🦖💥

I'm not sure about the local flavour attempts though... feels like they're trying too hard to be quirky about Hull and Nigel Farage 🤔. Still, it's all part of the charm, right? The show's just got that old-school magic going on - slapstick comedy and all the familiar set pieces, it's a tradition for a reason!

I'm gonna take my kiddo's to this one again next year, can't wait to see what Kevin gets up to 🎁👍

🎭👑 I'm loving how York Theatre Royal is keeping the panto tradition alive with their Sleeping Beauty show! It's always so much fun for families 🤣, and they've got it down to a science - who needs new gimmicks when you can stick to what works, right? 😂 The addition of Kevin the velociraptor 🦖 and Nurse Nellie is a great touch, and I'm so glad Robin Simpson is bringing his A-game as the dame 👩‍🚒. The supporting cast isn't bad either - Tommy Carmichael's Buttons-style performance as Jangles is hilarious 😂! My only gripe is that some of the local references feel a bit forced 🤔, but overall it's just another year of slapstick comedy and laughter for families to enjoy 👏

man i love panto season every year 🎄😂 kevin the velociraptor tho is a game changer, robin simpson nails that dame role & keeps me on my toes! and jennie dale as one of the fairies? best casting ever 🤣 can't wait for next yr's show 👏
