Southampton sack Will Still after five months with team close to drop zone

Southampton Sacks Young Manager Will Still as Relegation Looms

Five months into a three-year contract, Southampton have axed 33-year-old manager Will Still, who took over one of the youngest managerial roles in English football. The decision comes after a dismal run of form, with Saints dropping closer to the Championship drop zone. Still's tenure was marked by just two league wins from 13 matches, including a solitary victory since a stoppage-time opening-day win against Wrexham.

A crushing defeat at home to Preston on Saturday has now stretched Southampton's losing streak to three league games, following losses at Blackburn and Bristol City. The club's decision to make a change was not taken lightly, with technical director Johannes Spors stating that Still had "gave everything" to improve performances and results.

Despite the struggles on the pitch, Still is said to be a great person who has left a positive mark on the team. His departure has also led to the exit of several key staff members, including assistants Rubén Martínez and Clément Lemaitre, as well as former club coach Carl Martin.

The situation has taken a more serious turn off the pitch, with defender Nathan Wood facing criticism for verbally abusing supporters after leaving the field at St Mary's on Saturday. Wood apologized for his actions, acknowledging that he let his emotions get the better of him and vowing to learn from the experience.

With Southampton now looking to bounce back from their struggles, interim under-21s head coach Tonda Eckert has taken charge. The club's technical director Spors expressed confidence in Eckert's ability to turn things around this season and climb back up the league table.

lol what happened here? i mean, 5 months into a 3 year contract already? that's crazy. still, as a person, seems like he was doing okay, just not the manager part 🤷‍♂️. gotta feel for him, been through a lot on and off the pitch now. hope whoever comes in next can turn things around, would be nice to see saints back up there 📈

🤔 still think SAINTS need to get some fresh blood in the dugout, been reading about Eckert taking over & I'm kinda curious to see if he can do some magic with the team 🧙‍♂️💫 but anyway, hope Nathan Wood apologizes for his outburst, nobody likes a bad apple in the stadium 🍎😔

Ugh, I'm tellin' ya... 33-year-old manager gets the axe after just a few months? 🤯 That's like gettin' fired from a part-time job after one week! Still might've had some good intentions, but results on the pitch were laughable. Three losses in a row and they're still clingin' to survival mode? 😅 I remember when my dad used to watch Southampton games and he was always sayin', "This team's gotta get their act together!" 🙄 Now it seems like they're just throwin' good money after bad. What do you think, did the club have no other choice? 🤔

man, have you ever seen how fast life can change like that? one day you're on top of your game, next day you're struggling to stay afloat 😩. it's like that with sports teams too, they go through ups and downs just like we do in life.

sometimes we gotta take a step back and reevaluate what's not working. still might've been given a chance to turn things around but didn't quite get the results he needed 🤔. but hey at least he's still got his integrity intact - that's something we can all learn from!

and let this be a lesson to us all, emotions run high in life and sports 😬. nathan wood's reaction was a wake-up call for him and the rest of the team. we've gotta keep our cool and stay focused on what matters most.

anyway, it looks like southampton's got some new blood coming in 🔄 and i'm rooting for them to turn their season around!

Man... another season gone down the drain for Saints 🤕😩 Still, I gotta give him props, he took on a tough job at such a young age and gave it his all. The club's decision to axe him now is harsh, considering he didn't have the best run of form, but you can't blame him for that either 🙃. It's like when you're on a losing streak in FIFA, no matter how hard you try, things just aren't going your way 😂.

Wood, though... what was he thinking?! 🤯 Verbal abuse towards the fans? Unacceptable, mate. He should've kept his cool, especially after getting sent off 🚫. Anyway, Eckert's in charge now and I think that's a good move for the club. They need someone to shake things up and get them back on track 🔥. Fingers crossed they can turn it around this season! ⚽

omg like they got rid of manager will still already 🤯 only 5 months into his job and the team is tanking 😩 i mean can u blame them tho? 2 wins out of 13 matches is just straight trash 🚮 hopefully the new guy comes in and brings some magic to st mary's 💫

Still feels like they had no choice, right? I mean, three losses in a row is not gonna fly at that level of football... 🤔 Still seems like a good guy too, so it's sad to see him go. Wonder what happened behind closed doors, but the club said he gave everything, so you gotta give 'em that 😐 Now they're hoping Eckert can turn things around, fingers crossed for them! 👍

🤷‍♂️ Like, what a shocker! Another manager gone, another season looking like it's gonna be a total disaster 🚮. I mean, who wouldn't want to take over a team that's been struggling for months? Sounds like Will Still was the epitome of stability and consistency 😂. Two league wins from 13 matches is just what you need to get the job done, right? 😒

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that the players just aren't good enough or that the team's overall performance has been a mess 🤦‍♂️. Nope, it must've been Still's fault for not making enough magic happen on the pitch ✨.

On the bright side, I guess the staff exodus means there's gonna be some fun office politics to watch unfold 🎉. And hey, at least Nathan Wood apologized for his outburst... but I'm sure that'll totally fix everything 😊.

OMG 🤯, can you believe what happened to Southampton FC? 😱 Will Still might not be the worst manager ever, I mean two wins out of 13 isn't too shabby, but that last run has been brutal 💔. Like, you gotta feel for the guy though, he's only 33 and took a pretty big hit on his managerial career 🤕.

But for real though, who was expecting them to stay up this season? 😂 It's all good news for someone like Tonda Eckert tho, taking charge of the under-21s is a great opportunity for him to show what he's got 💼. Can't wait to see how they bounce back from this, might be a good chance for them to regroup and come stronger 🔄. And gotta give it up to Nathan Wood for owning up to his mistake and apologizing 🙏, that takes a big man.
