Victims of NYC storm were handymen who helped around their buildings

A pair of Brooklyn and a Manhattan resident, who were also handy men for their own buildings, lost their lives during Thursday's intense rainstorm in NYC.

Aaron Akaberi, 39, was last seen entering his flooded basement apartment at Kingston Avenue in Flatbush on Thursday before the storm hit - he was familiar to neighbors as someone who could be called on to help out around the building.

As water poured into the cramped subterranean unit, Akaberi reportedly rushed back inside for his dogs - however multiple witnesses have revealed that no second dog was found alive. His death was a tragic reminder of the perils faced by those who live in low-lying areas during heavy rainfall events.

Juan Carlos Montoya Hernandez, 43, who also worked as handyman for the same building where he lost his life, had just entered the basement utility room to fix an electrical issue when tragedy struck. Neighbors have shared stories of how he was not only diligent but also kind-hearted in helping others and even assisting a neighbor with her daily errands.

His death has raised questions about whether the apartment's basement is safe for occupation - neighbors claimed that both areas where men died had previously flooded, prompting many to doubt that residents living below ground floor units are adequately protected against such disasters.

.. this makes me so sad πŸ€• Can you believe they lost their lives in their own home? I'm thinking about their families too... my grandma used to live in a small apartment building in the city and she always worried about flooding because of the pipes and sewers, you know how that can get all clogged during heavy rain. It's like, we should be helping people who need it most, not putting them in harm's way by making their homes uninhabitable... I'm just so frustrated 😀

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I'm like totally freaking out about this πŸŒͺ️... but then again, have you considered the fact that these guys were, like, super handy and could've probably fixed up their apartments to be less prone to flooding in the first place? πŸ€” But at the same time, it's crazy that they didn't get some warning or evacuation order before the storm hit - shouldn't the city be doing more to alert people who live in flood zones? πŸ’‘ I mean, I'm not saying it's the city's fault entirely... but maybe, like, we need to rethink our building codes and emergency protocols to prevent this kind of thing from happening again? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€• just saw this and it's so sad... 2 ppl lost their lives in a storm, & they're handyman for the same building where ppl live πŸ πŸ’”. did u know that NYC gets an average of 43 inches of rainfall per year? πŸ“Š but only 10% of homes have flood insurance πŸ€‘. according to data from 2020, NY had the 4th highest number of weather-related deaths in the US 🚨. stats show that low-lying areas like Brooklyn & Manhattan are most vulnerable to flooding 🌑️. did u know that NYC's basement units account for over 20% of all apartments? πŸ“ˆ it's scary thinking about ppl living in these conditions 🀯

The tragic loss of Aaron Akaberi and Juan Carlos Montoya Hernandez is a stark reminder of the vulnerability faced by those residing in low-lying areas during heavy rainfall events 🌧️. The fact that both men, who were familiar with the perils of flooding, lost their lives due to the sudden onset of water in their basements is nothing short of devastating πŸ’”.

It's worth noting that the incident has raised questions about the safety and adequacy of apartment buildings in such areas 🏒. The history of previous flooding incidents in these locations suggests a clear need for improved measures to protect residents, including enhanced flood defenses, regular maintenance, and better communication systems ⚠️.

The loss of two lives serves as a poignant reminder that even those who live and work in our communities are not immune to the fury of nature πŸŒͺ️. It's imperative that we prioritize the safety and well-being of all residents, particularly those living in areas prone to flooding β˜•οΈ.

🌧️ The tragic loss of life in this intense rainstorm is a harsh reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those living in low-lying areas πŸ€•. I think it's really concerning that Aaron and Juan were both handy men who knew their buildings so well, yet still lost their lives in such a senseless way πŸ’”. The fact that they rushed back into the flooded basement to save their dogs is truly heart-wrenching 😭.

It raises important questions about the safety of these types of dwellings πŸ€”. Neighbors are right to question whether residents living below ground floor units are properly protected against such disasters ⚠️. We need to take a hard look at our building codes and emergency preparedness measures to ensure that no one else has to suffer like Aaron and Juan did πŸ’₯.

We also need to think about the emotional toll this event will take on the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives 🀝. It's not just about the physical safety of these buildings, but also about creating a sense of security and well-being for everyone who calls them home ❀️.

man, this is so sad πŸ€• another two lives lost due to flooding in NYC it's crazy how a simple rainstorm can be deadly. I mean, we're talking about Brooklyn and Manhattan here - areas with relatively advanced infrastructure, but still, the old basements just aren't designed for heavy rainfall events. it's all well and good that these guys were handy men and could fix up their own places, but when nature decides to throw its weight around, you can't control the elements, right? πŸŒ‚ another thing, why haven't there been more warnings or alerts system in place for low-lying areas? i mean, i know we're always told about extreme weather events, but it's one thing to hear it on the news and another to feel the effects when you live below ground. 🚨

Man... πŸ€• just heard about these two guys who lost their lives in this crazy rainstorm in NYC. I mean, they were just handyman's trying to make ends meet and help out their neighbors, but the system failed them. It's so sad that Aaron had to go back into the flooded basement for his dogs and didn't come out again... 🐢😭 And Juan was just trying to fix a light fixture when the water came rushing in... it's just not right. The fact that the apartment's basement hasn't been fixed after previous floods raises so many questions about safety standards. I feel like we're just playing a losing game against nature's fury and it's heartbreaking to see innocent people caught in the crossfire. πŸŒͺοΈπŸ˜”

This is just crazy 🀯. I mean, I've lived in NYC all my life and I never thought about how crappy some of these apartments can be, especially when it comes to flooding. I heard they used to fix up old buildings without worrying too much about the foundation or drainage system... talk about a recipe for disaster! 😬

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Two guys, just trying to do their jobs and live in their homes, and they end up getting swept away by water like that 🌊. And now people are questioning if these buildings are safe? Yeah, I think we should be asking how on earth this happened in the first place πŸ’”

I'm not looking for answers from politicians or anyone else just yet... but I do want to see some independent investigations and reports from experts who know what they're doing πŸ“°. No sense in just sweeping this under the rug because it's a tragedy and we don't want to talk about it πŸ˜’

man, it's crazy how these storms can just pop up outta nowhere... I remember hearing about Katrina back in 2005 and how it devastated the city πŸŒͺ️. Now it's like we're still dealing with the consequences of climate change 🀯. These poor guys, losing their lives over something that should've been preventable... I mean, come on, can't our buildings be designed to handle some water? It's not like they're asking for much πŸ’”. And those dogs, man... 🐢😒. It's a tragedy and we should all be taking note of how we can improve our infrastructure to avoid this kind of thing happening again 🀝.

man this is so sad πŸ€• what's even more concerning is that these guys were just trying to help their community and ended up losing their lives... it's like the system failed them 🚧 i mean we all know howNYC deals with flooding, but come on, shouldn't they be doing better by now? πŸ’” the fact that Akaberi went back in for his dogs is so selfless, you gotta wonder what he was thinking at that moment 😒 and now it's like his family and loved ones have to deal with the aftermath... it's just heartbreaking 🀯

πŸ€• My heart just went out to those families and friends of these two amazing guys who lost their lives in the storm πŸŒͺοΈπŸ’”. It's absolutely devastating to think about Aaron rushing back into the flooded basement to save his dogs, only to find them unharmed but him... 😱.

And Juan Carlos' story is just heartbreaking too - someone so kind and willing to lend a helping hand to others. It makes you wonder if we're doing enough to keep these low-lying areas safe for people who call them home 🏠πŸ’ͺ.

These incidents are a harsh reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of taking precautions when it comes to severe weather events β›ˆοΈ. I'm sending all my thoughts and condolences to Aaron's and Juan Carlos' loved ones πŸ’•.

πŸ™ I'm just so shocked and sad to hear about those two guys who lost their lives in that storm... it's just awful, you know? It's like, we've had these big rainstorms before, but I guess it's getting worse and worse... I remember when I was growing up in Brooklyn, we'd get these floods all the time, but at least back then, we knew how to deal with it. Nowadays, it's just so different... all these new buildings going up, and people living way below ground floor units... it's just not right πŸ€•. And those poor dogs? I mean, I know they're not human, but still, it's just heartbreaking. We need to make sure our city is safe for everyone, especially the ones who can't protect themselves πŸ’”

I'm SO SAD TO HEAR ABOUT THESE TWO GUYS!!! THEY WERE LIKE NEIGHBORS FROM HEAVEN!!!! HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?! WE NEED BETTER SAFETY MEASURES IN PLACE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN LOW-LYING AREAS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO CAN'T AFFORD TO MOVE TO A HIGHER FLOOR πŸ˜©πŸ’”. IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT THAT THESE TWO HANDYMEN LOST THEIR LIVES TRYING TO PROTECT THEIR DOGS AND HELP OUT THEIR NEIGHBORS 🐢🀝. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR BUILDINGS ARE SAFE FOR EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE MOST VULNERABLE AMONG US 😊πŸ’ͺ
