The specter of an artificial intelligence unleashing a biological plague on humanity has captured the imagination of many, including Silicon Valley and Washington D.C.’s elite. While some experts warn that this risk is all too real, others dismiss it as nothing more than a worst-case scenario.
In reality, the threat posed by AI-created bioweapons is far more nuanced. The dual-use dilemma – the debate surrounding whether scientists should publish potentially hazardous biological research – has plagued the scientific community for decades. This conundrum predates the advent of large language models and advanced AI systems.
Experts point out that while AI can accelerate the process of accessing and utilizing biological information, it is not a game-changer when it comes to creating bioweapons. David Bellamy, research scientist at the Institute of Foundation Models in Sunnyvale, California, notes that the real bottleneck lies with the physical process of assembling a virus or other biological agent.
Creating a bioweapon requires obtaining gene fragments, building a whole genome from scratch, and verifying that the virus can infect humans. This demands tremendous expertise, resources, and know-how – far beyond what even the most advanced AI system could accomplish on its own.
Jason Kelly, CEO of Ginkgo Bioworks, shares this assessment. He points out that an AGI would need access to a fully autonomous lab in order to develop and deploy a bioweapon. However, such labs do not exist yet – and even if they did, humans could still intervene to prevent the creation of a deadly disease.
Immunologist Derya Unutmaz agrees that scientists would be able to thwart any attempts by an AGI to develop a supervirus, thanks to other AI systems that could swiftly develop a vaccine. This raises questions about the practicality of using bioweapons as a means of attack – especially when compared to more traditional methods.
Francois Belloux, genetic biologist and professor of computational biology, notes that biological warfare is often misunderstood in terms of its effectiveness. “If you want to kill people,” he says bluntly, “there are much better ways to do so than trying to engineer some virus or bacterium and then release it.”
Despite this, experts like Olivia Scharfman remain concerned about the potential for AI-assisted bioterrorism. She notes that while an AGI may not be able to create a bioweapon on its own, it could certainly pay someone to do so – making it a more pressing concern than some might think.
The debate surrounding AI-created bioweapons highlights the need for better protections against all biological threats, including existing pathogens like H1N1. This includes high-level actions such as passing legislation to enhance security protocols around DNA synthesis technology and upgrading air purification systems in buildings to mitigate risk from all viruses.
Ultimately, while the threat posed by AI-created bioweapons is real, it is often exaggerated and misunderstood. As we move forward, it will be essential to separate fact from fiction and have a nuanced discussion about the risks and benefits of advanced technologies like AI.
